MG MGF Technical - Swapping the Radiator
Hi Guys, My radiator is being replaced next week. Who can tell me if the front bumber needs to be removed to achieve this, and is the procedure for changing the coolant as described in Car Mechanics MGF project for June, acceptable ? Cheers Kieren
Kieren Gibson
The car mechanics mag info is being supplied by mike (hence all the plugs ;-) so I would be suprised if there was anything missing (note how they say 'till the pipes get warm' rather than 'till the water is up to temp' which is the fault in the MGR manual)
Will Munns
Good point Will, I just wanted to double-check. You know how it is - confidence inspiration required when messing around with the cooling system... Cheers Kieren

Hi Kieren, whats missing on Your radiator ? Is it corrosion on the lower part or something else ? Just curious as my much pampered "no rain-summertime only" "F" has a rather bad looking lower part of the radiator that puzzles me ! This got to be some kind of galvanic corrosion that is triggered by time more than external use /abuse.... BR, Carl. |
Carl
Hi carl, It's badly corroded - There are no fins left on it at all. I'm just not sure wether the bumper has to come off or not to gain access. Also if I get the engine cover off and have it as prepared as possible for the doctor to take it away it'll reduce the labour costs. Not sure about driving with said cover off though! Cheers Kieren

Kieren, Very hot with the cover off, but you could have it on just two screws and pull them out upon delivery. Note driving with the hood down and the engine cover off may dammage the rear screen. Will

Good point yet again Will - it's probably only 10 mins work anyway. Cheers Kieren

Carl, Mike mentioned in the F-TF modifications thread that the TF radiator was now made of alloy. Presumably this was done to improve the radiator's resistance to corrosion? It should fit an MGF Kieren. And whilst you are at it, you could perform the remote thermostat mod that Carl has designed ;o)
Rob Bell
Rob, It's actually being done for me. I'll have to look into the remote thermostat mod and see if I can tempt my MGF Doc to complete that aswell. Details in the archives I guess ? Cheers Kieren

No fins at all? This means no sufficient cooling, hence HGF? Might this be a plausible reasons?
David
Kieren, Dieter's web site has the info needed: http://www.mgfcar.de/thermostat/Water_System_Mods.htm You'll need a 2600 SD1 remote thermostat housing...
Rob Bell
Kierren, According to the manual you do have to remove the front bumber and the bonnet locking platform (the metal sheet on top of the radiator) in order to remove the radiator assembly. Spyros

<According to the manual > Lol,no need for the bumper to come off, take off the top panel and the screws into the top edge of the bumper.HTH. BTW have seen cars with only 20k and corroded rads so probably quality of materials. The ali rads a la TF will dissipate heat and £'s quicker;-) Mike.

Thanks guys, All the advice much appreciated. Cheers Kieren

Nice info mike.... I want to check if my radiator fan is still able to work, since I haven't heard it for months. I've checked a couple of fuses, but now I can reach the fan without removing the bumper (read... braking the indicators again and again). thanks
