MG MGF Technical - Switch off ABS

Can anybody confirm that it is possible to switch off the ABS by simply removing the ABS fuse?

I'm doing a gymkhana (grass autotest) on Sunday and, as it's likely to be slippery, the ABS will be something of a handicap!

Thanks,

The short answer to this is yes! :o)

Should be equally possible to fit a switch to achieve the same effect as seen with the EPAS switch...

Rob,
I was thinking of a circuit-breaker that replaces the fuse, push to reset!

easy job to install a push on/off switch for EPAS. Well documented on the internet, however you might not want to use the recirculation switch with relay. a set of 2 normal relays will replace the one as described in the manual. (as I did)

Thanks, but - no room for a switch on the dash, as I have front fogs, aircon AND a hard-top... the full set!!!

Neil,

I can understand why you want to isolate the ABS for your gymkhana, but remember that this is a safety feature and your insurance company might take a dim view if there was a permanent switch to turn the system on and off while on the public road. If I were you, I'd just pull the fuse for the odd occasion that you want to switch the ABS off while on private land.

Neil,
Presumably you would not want to switch off the ABS during normal driving, like your fog lights, hard top window heater, AC or recirculating therefore a toggle switch with a safety cover under the bonnet is all that may be needed.
This is what I have used with a circuit fitted behind the parcel shelf to select the engine bay fan On from the HRW switch for Hot & High driving.

I wasn't intending to put a switch in. No room in the dash as I said, I agree about the insurance, and may not look so good to a prospective new owner when I come to sell it...

No point in putting a switch under the bonnet; may as well pop the fuse (or one of those circuit breakers that fits in the fuse holder and replaces the fuse - sorry, that was not clear).

BTW it takes me ages to open the bonnet... walk around the front of the car, remember that I have to open it from the boot, back to the back, pull the lever then back round the front... wonder why it doesn't stay up on it's own, etc

Thanks for your help guys,

Perhaps if you used a relay that defaults to leaving the circuit in the 'on' position, and rig it such that a momentary switch engerises the relay to the 'off' position. This way, switching off the ignition will lead to the ABS defaulting back on come the next time you start the car?

A small red button momentary switch costs pennies from Maplin, and possibly is the way to go? I'd probably mount it on the instrument shroud/binnacle, possibly on the opposite side to the instrument dimmer/rheostat.
