MG MGF Technical - Swopping seats

Hi guys,

My driver seat (black leather) is beginning to show signs of wear and tear from people getting in and out of the car brushing against the seat etc. Would I be able to swop this with the passenger seat ? This is still in excellent condition and by positioning the current drivers seat on the passenger side it would hide some of the wear that is showing.

I have the link for sfforever and have the procedure for seat removal from there.

Cheers

Tricky one as the reclining mech will be on the wrong side and there may be an issue with swapping the seatbelt clip too.

You could try some Gliptone products, they do a scuff renovating cream as part of their leather care range.

Also worth mentioning that leather seats ought to be cleaned and nourished from time to time to keep them supple and in good nick.

I think you might have problems because the seatbelt pretensioners are attached to the seats. Maybe you could swap the seat facings over?

Also the seat rails have diffrent fixings to the floor on one side and the tunnel on the other.

However, I assume that the leather is just a cover, and no doubt the covers can be removed and swopped. Really you need to speak to someone who retrims seats, you could speak to your local coach trimmer, or MS, anyone know if mike does the work himself?
Will Munns

Spot on Will, I was just about to say the same.... Get a coach trimmer to swap over the covers. You might even find that the likes of MGF Centre might have one good seat/cover from a damaged pair.....! Worth a try.

>> anyone know if mike does the work himself? <<

He used to, now i believe he has someone in-house who does the trim work. It is all done in-house though, so Mike is a good person to speak to on this subject.

Jeff, if the seat is a half leather VVC cover we do have some brand new ones in at sensible money . The other suggestion to swap the covers over is good too and is easiy to do even with the seats in the car, about 30mins to do.
SF I still keep having a go on the sewing machine to keep my hand in;-)

The problem with the original leather from rover/mg is that they don't use the good sort of leather. It's a bit like on Alfa's where they use furniture leather. It's a lot cheaper, but not so strong.
In cars it's necesary to use leather like montana or napa. Better resistance against high temp.,rain and "heavy duty use".
Normaly it's possible to replace the piece in the seat that's damaged, but then there will be a colour difference. So my advice, when you choose for a leather interior trim, choose the good one, (the one that will be beautifull for years), not the cheap one.

By the way, their prices start at 750 euro for 2 doors + 2 seats.

Ahem, wish I could get a licence to use that logo to Bruno;-)

First of all Mike ,it's not my company, but I know offcorse that everything is available WITHOUT the logo. Not sure they haven't permission to do that, maybe they have, because like I said, it isn't my company.
They had done my MG, and as I can say, it's very well done. Anyway, Mike, I'm not saying your work isn't good, why should I ?

Can you purchase badges and sew them in, or is the problem selling something with an MG badge that is not atually made by MG?
Will Munns

Some food for thought. Didn't think about the recliners etc - bugger. Also hadn't considered local coach trimmer.

Mike - it is the 1/2 leather with dark green piping (the piping needs attention too) and I believe the material pattern is called black ash. If they can be found for 'sensible' cash I may well look in to that in a few months (currently recovering from Silverstone expenditure!)

Thanks for all the info guys.

Nothing to stop you buying badges and sowing them in as long as it is a personal thing for your own use and not as a resale reason for making profits.

The trouble arises when a commercial concern uses another companies registered or copyright designs without their permission and the other company will only give that permission to their appointed suppliers normally after an agreed (huge) sum of money has changed hands.

Back in the early days of the *F* Rover were actively engaged in the 'prosecution' of offenders and I know Mike was warned off - I think that some of the overseas people get away with it by being remote - a definate unfair advantage in these days of internet trading.

Hi Guys,

I have exactly the same problem with the seats on my car (worn piping etc on drivers side). Is it really a 30 min job to swop covers (I've just had a HGF so could do with saving some cash) as mike suggests ? If so how do I do it.

Me too, I'd like to swap my leather seat covers...
Are there some important tips ? or should I just give it a go ...
