MG MGF Technical - Taking wheel off
Hi, ive got the SP MGF Cheetah and have got a problem with the wheels. One of the tyres have become damaged and needs replacing but the garage that supplied me the car about 6 months ago never gave me anything to take off the locking wheel nuts or the centre cap that covers them. Is it possible to remove these without and is there any risk of damaging the wheels as they are not the standard MGF ones as you probably know. Thanks |

Hi, Are they the standard Rover locking nuts? If so ask your Rover dealer to remove them for you, £low or free depending on your relationship with them. You may then have to buy a new set (with key!) and a removal tool. Regards, Kes. |

I dont think they are standard rovers ones as the wheels werent made by Rover but by the SP performance company who arent around anymore. |

standard rover ones have a fake alloy cover with an indent which looks like a keyhole but isn't. this pulls off leaving you with a circular headed bolt with two (or more?) notches cut into the side to locate the 'key' |

As i say, i dont think they are standard rover ones, but are SP performance onces. I know is that they have a centre cap cover over the top which needs to be unlocked and then I presume locking wheel nuts underneath. Rang a few places who reckon its impossible to get them off without seriously damaging the wheel. |

We've been discussing the Panther (and Cheetah) over on the General BBS. The link that I found showing a picture of the Cheetah (http://mgf.rulezz.com/MO_EX_BO_main.html) seems to show standard MG square spoke wheels. Have your wheels been changed? Ralph |

Theyre not the wheels. They are 17inch SP Performance ones. |

Mike, your wheels are 17" 5-spoke Azev "Type A" rims. Picture of it can be found here: http://www.standres.com/graphics/31-4.jpg Not sure how the centre cap is held in place - it's not just an allen bolt or something simple like that is it? Try contacting the Azev UK distributors for help. Can't help you with locking wheel nuts - it rather depends on what variety are fitted. |

if push comes to shove you could carefully drill the side of the nut in a couple of places and drift a section away from the thread. What do the "thick fit fitters" do when punters turn up at the tyre depots or the AA/RAC at the side of the road? Good luck with the centre cap first though :) |
