MG MGF Technical - Tapping noise
Over the last week the F has been moved into and out of the garage every day but driven no further than the end of the drive. Tonight on starting it just to move it out of the garage there was a tapping noise coming from the engine, drove a short distance down the road to see if it cleared but it didn't. Sounded like a tappet noise as it got quicker with the engine revs. Will this noise go away with use or is it a trip to the dealer?

Have you checked the oil level? Also, it takes a bit for the oil to reduce the tapping noise. Give it a good drive until the oil temp hits 90 degrees. And see if the tapping is gone. Do you have VVC or Mpi? Shouldn't be something major..

Sounds like the hydraulic tappets to me as Hanah say give it a good run allowing the oil to warm up and force its way into all cracks and crevices that it had drained from whilst overwintering. Ted

Thanks guys, this morning to our relief the tapping noise had gone completely, the car still had a good 40 mile run without the roof on though. Just to be sure.

I am glad to hear that! :D If you have a VVC, you should expect to have more tappet noises. And just like what Ted says... :D

If I was you I would ensure that you change the oil every 6 months - I had this problem, and it took a complete set of Hydraulic tappets to cure the problem caused by low milage, and the oil getting sludge in it blocking the oilways. By the way, my car was 11 months old. Steve.

Mine was a week old and they eventually replaced the head.
