MG MGF Technical - TD charging problems

'51 TD. At idle, ammeter shows no charge. With headlights on, big discharge. Regulator is a two-coil, five post type. Generator seems to work fine. Can ANYONE tell me how to adjust the voltage regulator so that it does not discharge at idle?

I've read the tech manual and it's all pretty much confusing. Simple instructions would be greatly appreciated.
Tom

Hi Tom,
looks like you have posted on the wrong board. You will likely get a much better response about your TD on the TD-TF list. People with an MG F/TF may not know a lot about 'real' MGs. :-)

What is an ammeter....? The F doesn't have one.

Is that someone who eats pork?

;) ammeter >>> currency meter ;) battery charge current

Some MGF eating batteries should have ... LOL

Dooh, I would love to have such problems with _my_ MG TD.
Unfortunately I don't own one :(

Tom, Take no notice of the unkind remarks. As a owner of a real 1954 TF1500, as well as a new so called TF,
you must understand that these johny come latelies do not really understand real motor cars!
It is perfectly normal for the ammeter to show zero charge at idle, it is in fact recording a small discharge due to the the requirements of the engine igition system, but because of the inaccuraracy of these early instruments the amount is not large enough to be showing! At this time your ignition warning light will also be lit.
At idle therefore it is again perfectly normal for your ammeter to show a hefty discharge if you switch on any current requirment at IDLE! increase the engine revs however should result in the ammeter immediately swing to charge or balance and the ignition lamp going out. I dont think you have problem, but if you are still hesitant and feel you need help,go to your local auto electrician armed with your workshop manual. Any resetting of the regulator is a piece of cake, dont let him persuade you otherwise!
Good Luck!

*g
these johny come latelies will need your advise when MGF/TF electronic IC's get out of manufacturing and *we* need to "upgrade* to *true technicals*.
Some Relays, distributur contact and real coils. Errr, what about fuel jet control ?

Regards with due respect

No problem,as our Aussie friends would say!,providing you limit the questions to the most basic questions relating to when car were cars, ie had carbs, regulators, fuel pumps, plugs, coils and all sorts of other gismos you could play with!PS we also enjoyed wire wheels and would you believe, knock on!
In the meantime I am thoroughly enjoying my fake TF,( joking ,honest!)and will continue to read the theads and will add my comments as appropiate, both general and technical.
