MG MGF Technical - Temp Gauge Position ???

Hi guys,

Just out of interest what is the correct position that the temp gauge should at when fully warmed up?

(mines just below the middle)

Hi all,
On a lighter note : There is nothing reasuring about that temp gauge ! The thing is that You can have a total engine meltdown and that gauge still sits a notch below middle mark . Only when all is totally lost the needle leaves itīs center location and peggs at the upper "too hot" scale . ( Yes,the tone indicates that we have another "HGF-customer" over here that phoned me last week-end !)

Hi Carl,

Just asking as I to had HGF about two weeks ago and now paranoid all the time..!

I was driving from work to home yesterday and I booted the car a bit after waiting 10mins for it to warm up, but when I got home and got out of the car I saw a trail of some liquid down the road where I just came from. Looked under the car but no sign of any liquid there, so got back in and drove round the block quite fast to build up the pressure, but no sign of anything again, so I guess it was off another car - but still not sure..

If you want to be really paranoid, fit a digital temperature guage (as fitted to the Stack instrument pack in the Elise). Then you can panic yourself by observing the cycling temperature from the head water outlet caused by the opening and closing of the thermostat...

The MG's guage is damped. Very damped. If the temperature rises above that one gradation below middle, then be very worried: the water temperature is increasing exponentially (the scale is almost logarithmic)... 8o((

Hi Rob,

What does one notch on the gauge mean then?
Not sure I follow here - is it that bad?

Guys,

also where can i get a digital temp gauge and are they easy to fit - costs?

Good question! It isn't a linear scale! The best position to temperature relationship that I've seen is on Dieter's site: http://www.lame-delegation.de/mgf-net.de/sensor/index.htm

Digital temp guages are available from the likes of Demon Tweeks. You could go for a dual water/ oil temperature guage if you liked, but these are rather expensive (3 figure sum, IIRC)

A related, but slightly off topic question...why is there not an oil pressure gauge on TF's,just an oil temp. My old B has a pressure gauge and it's always reassuring to see it at a steady 60psi or so
