MG MGF Technical - temp gauge reading for a VVC

my temp guage sits at just below the centre mark on a normal drive to work, ie the back roads with no stop start, is this level about right?

If you mean the water temperature gauge, then yes, that is where mine is normally.

If you mean the oil temperature gauge, then mine normally varies between the second mark (90 deg??) and straight up (120??) depending on the journey type.
James

Yes, the water temperature gauge on my 1998 VVC always sits at just below the centre mark. It never rises above that point even in extreme ambient temperatures with the a/c on. I believe the cooling system on the F is quite efficient PROVIDED that everything is working normally (i.e. no airlocks, no loose electrical connections, no leaks, no faulty epansion tank cap, no faulty sensors etc)

I had a look on mine and the water gauge is roughly half way. On the oil temp gauge it sits a little over 60 but certainly not over 90. Is this normal or have I problems?
Neil

Well yes and no. The good news is the car is fine, the bad news is that you never get it warmed up properly, generally by driving only short journeys and this will alow mayonazie gunk to form in the oil. Luckly a good blast will boil off the water in the oil and all will be well again.

So all I need is to take it for a good run? I only recently purchased the car and they guy before only did a few miles to and from work. It is a 96 with 30k on the clock. I am doing about 70 miles a day now myself so this should hopefully sort things out. Thanks for that.
Neil

Hi all,
"always sits just below centre mark and never moves "... Yes - that is because the instrument is soo damped that the only movement seen is when it moves from lowest point to that steady point! The tempsender needs a lot of steam during a long period to make any changes to that instrument ;) Insert a digital readout and You will see the fluctations until the whole cooling system is re-built aŽla Simons suggestions with a remote thermostat. Then and only then the car can be cruised OR trashed on a track with almost rock steady temp. Only one niggle with the cooling system doesnŽt get sorted by mentioned re-build : Prolonged idle at decent summer temps. sooner or later takes the coolant to the boiling point. But that is probably a fault connected to a too small coolant-pump and long restricting runs via all the piping in the system and a marginal radiator.
