MG MGF Technical - Temp gauze, what should it read?

I've read a little somewhere else about the temp gauze, but I'm very new to an MGF and I want to check...

Is it normal for the car to get warm to exactly one notch from the half way mark, and then for the gauze to stick there forever no matter how fast you drive or the ambiant outside temperature?

That's what mine does, and it strikes me as being a little warm, especially on fast drives.

Yep, gauge is bloody useless as an temp indicator, the position you mention is good for ~50->100 degrees C.

Coolant boils at 130
Will Munns

Ah that's how you spell gauge, thanks!

So, the notch below half way is as good as it gets. Well at least it's normal then.
Chris Heinrich Perkins

From recent overheating experience, I would back Will's comments! Bear in mind that the electric fan comes on at 95 degrees and off at 85 degrees (VVC), during which time the gauge will remain exactly on the notch below half way. When my car overheated a few months back due to a stuck thermostat, the gauge shot up from normal to hot in about 2 seconds. Trucked it to a Rover dealer and when it got hot again the testbook showed 118 degrees - so there you go, the first half of the gauge got me from 0 to 95 - then it took the whole latter half of the gauge to get to 118!! Keep a close eye on the oil temp, and the engine bay and oil temp overheat lights. By the time the gauge stirs into action, something is already wrong....
Mike

Yep, mine is the same.
Even when the rad fans cut in, the gauge stays at the same point.

Thanks for info.

Not an ideal gauge, but at least I know it's showing what everyone elses shows.

I do always keep an eye on the oil and temp gauge, as even before buying an F, I became paranoid about HGF!
Chris Heinrich Perkins

>I became paranoid about HGF!
Don't worry, that's normal too.
Bram

Even after three years ownership I am still paranoid and keep thinking it's going to happen again !!!!!!
