MG MGF Technical - Temp Sensor?

My temp gauge is currently inop' and after having a look at ECU Temp Sensor replacement instructions on the unltimatemg website thought I'd give that a go myself. My Rover MG dealership have given me a Coolant temp sensor which is blue, is this the same as the Brown ECU temp sensor or am I looking in the wrong place?

Please Help!!!

Cheers

nope, firstly I think they are keyed diffrently so they wont plug into the wrong place, and secondly I think they give diffrent resistance readings. so a trip back to the dealer.

actually are your trying to replace the coolant sensor?, if so they are very close to each other on the same pipe

Hi Graham,

the brown sensor is the one for the ECU (the management system needs to know how warm the engine is as well), whereas the sensor for the instrument guage is blue, and is sited immediately below the brown sensor in a vertical alignment.

Same process to replace.

Note that although I removed the circlip, there is actually no reason to do so - unbeknown to me at the time, this is designed to be pressed in, thus easily releasing the plug.

Hope that helps :o)

Cheers Guys,
Do I need to empty the coolant system or does the sensor just plug straight in?

Thanks Again

you may loose a smidgen of coolant but it should be OK

Just to second what Tim has just said - no need to drain the coolant: should be a straight swap.

Only thing to be aware of, don't perform the swap if the engine is hot! ;o)

Seems such an obvious thing to say Rob...!
But I did exactly that (impatient for it to cool down!) and although I'd released the pressure the coolant was still very very hot! Doh! :-)
