MG MGF Technical - temp sensor part no.

hello,

can anyone tell me the rover part number for the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor please?

thanks,

s
stuart

I can't, but I can tell you there are two diffrent sensors dependant on age.
Will Munns

thanks for that, its a 1998. i've got a replacement sensor but its not got a brown body like the old one. i wanted to check the dealer hasnt given me the temp guage sensor by mistake but they arent answering the phone.
stuart

You'll want GTR206

Straightforward to swap: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/hgf_pages/related_problems_overheating.htm

BTW I've written that you need to remove the spring clip - you don't - you just need to press it in to release!
Rob Bell

The Brown asensor _is_ the ECU sensor, but as I said, there are two types - I guess Rob's number is from when he did it, and he has a 'historicaly challanged'* F.

*avoiding the word old as a driver of a, ahem, classic.
Will Munns

interesting, the dealer has given me ADU7176 and stung me twenty quid for it. thanks for the help.

s
stuart

doh, i cant read. i have ADU7161.

s

Need to check my invoice - the sensor might be listed under two part numbers... Or perhaps this is the newer sensor that Will mentions? A quick check of the EPC ought to settle this.
Rob Bell

just for completeness:
'old' engine coolant temp sensor part no. is GTR206 (brown plastic body)
'new' ect sensor part no. is ADU7161 (black plastic body)
change over appears to be some time in 1998.
thanks & regards

Not sure this is quite right, Black is used on early cars for the temp gauge, on later cars this was changed to blue. AFAIK the ECU sensor has always been brown, even though there are two versions.
Will Munns

hello,
dealer assures me that early ect sensor is brown, later ect sensor is black. ect loom plug has always been brown. i'd love to go back and tell him he's wrong if someone can definitively say otherwise.
this is the sort of thing that keeps me awake at night, not being able to pay the mortgage on the other hand doesnt bother me. explain that one.

Ordering code.
YCB100370
ECU coolant temp sensor was blue, is blue and never had been any different colour.

The gauge sensor changed from brown to black, though.
New P/N MEK100170, old P/N MEK100060.

Everything else seams rubbish.
Dieter K.

Hold on... just looked up VVC options versus none VVC ... ;)

I think that's the reason for all the confusions.

EPC is wrong, or at last most confusing ??
Have got an older version only.

Can anyone with newer confirm, please ?
Dieter K.

>ECU coolant temp sensor was blue, is blue and never had been any different colour.

BROWN

>The gauge sensor changed from brown to black, though.

BLACK TO BLUE

go unplug the brown one if you're not sure, engine will run at 1200 and the fan will come on.
Will Munns

Boohooo ! Yep, that's right of course. Changed the damn thingy myself-

Conclusion: never believe the EPC but better see own websites... if availiable :(

As shown on Rob's site

Why did the sensor change for the elise then ?

Sorry Dieter, wrong again... ;-)

ECU coolant temp sensor on my '02 TF 160 is black and not brown (assuming that the ECU sensor is still the horizontal one that you can see easily from above).

I unplugged the connector to that sensor the other day to spray some contact cleaner onto it, following our earlier debates here on this issue.

We only need it to turn yellow via green and then we have all the colours of a decent bruise - well, except perhaps purple... ;o)

Per, that's interesting- thanks for letting us know that TF's use a black ECU temp sensor (it is indeed the horizontally mounted sensor on the engine coolant outlet stub pipe).

Time to study the EPC!
Rob Bell

>that TF's use a black ECU temp sensor
>Time to study the EPC!

LOL, ;)
I did ... assuming this is initial part of the confusion.

However, to increase the confusion:
Who knows whether the factiry worker knew which sensor to bolt where ? ... HaaarHaaar :-)
Dieter K.

per,
thanks for that, it confirms the dealer's info above (which is reassuring).

I remember replacing a dodgy 'brown' one on my 1995 F (RIP)

The change might have been made if Rover suspected the ECT sensor of contributing to HGFs.
