MG MGF Technical - Temperature and Gaitor

Dear all,

Two questions..

I need to replace the water temperature sensor on my 97 F. It is the bottom one that goes to the water temperature gauge on the dashboard.

All I need to know is: do I need to drain the engine coolant before changing the sensor, or is it located in a 'pocket'.

If I do need to drain the coolant, is there anything I should know when refilling the system. I have heard that the method of refilling can be critical.

My second question...

The rubber gaitor that protects the gear selection cable as it enters my gearbox, has split into about four pieces.

One of my local Rover parts desks told me that I can only replace this gaitor if I buy a complete cable, priced at £56.00 plus VAT.

Does anyone know of a way round this or, indeed if it is true?!

Thanks in advance,

Rich.

Richard - the sensor can be replaced (assuming that the engine is cold!!!) with out draining the system. Only a couple of drops will fall out.

Regarding the rubber gaiter on the selector cable - no idea whether this is true or not. It may be a case of trawling the electronic parts catalogue until a part number is found. Or not. You could also try contacting one of the MGF breakers/parts specialists - such as the MGF Centre.

Hope this helps :o)

Thanks, Rob.

'a few drips' means: swap it bloody quick and you'll lose 1/4 pint.

Hi Richard
Just one thing BE CAREFUL!!! It only took one turn on the sensor for me to snap it at the thread inside the coolant outlet... 10 mins later £97 bill from the local MG garage, DOH!!!

The gear selector cable gaitor still isn't availiable as spare.
Just forget it, or do some DIY with a cut bicycle hose and two off cable ties.

Picture is on my site on the 'damages' link on the left.
