MG MGF Technical - Temperature rise??
Drove my Mgf up to Norfolk yesterday, got about 100 miles in and the temp gauge raised to the half Mark, up until now for the past 18 months it has never moved from the Mark immediately below the half Mark. I temp selector/knob/Thingy wasnt on full heat, so I turned it to full heat and turned the fan on to 1.... Temp dropped immediately? Is that normal.. Those 100 miles were at 70 mph (truthfully) I'm on a mpg experiment at the moment! The car has allegedly had the hg done before I bought it. Thanks Jon |

Was the water level normal before and after? If so it doesn't sound too much to worry about. Does the radiator fan kick in if you leave it idling for 20 minutes?(which will ruin your mpg!) Has the fan fuse been upgraded to 20A? If it is the original rad (probably lost some cooling efficiency by now) and the if fan doesn't work it would explain your symptoms. |

Hi, thank you for the reply Coolant on the join before, about 5pm above when I arrived Not sure about the fuse and I don't think the radiator fan kicks in at all.. Must have a look before I set off on the return journey. Is that engine or passenger fuse box?? Jon |

Jon That is the front bonnet fuse box situated directly behind the battery. Tony |

F6 in the underbonnet(I think it is referred to as satellite) fuse box should be upgraded to 20A. If you want to check whether the rad fan comes on you can leave the car ticking over for about 20 minutes which wastes loads of fuel - slightly less if you do it after a warmed up run. If you just want to see if the fan works you can remove the plug from the brown temp sensor and switch the ignition on - the fan should default to on. However this doesn't confirm to you that the sensor will switch it on under normal circumstances - but it 'may be assumed'! |

Found the fuse. It's a 25a fuse, drove 20 miles thus afternoon and heard the radiator fan kick in so it works, must say it's the first time I've ever heard it! Fingers crossed the journey back to Hampshire on Thursday morning should prove whether it was just one of those things?!?! Time will tell! Thanks all Jon |

Jon it is very hard to hear the radiator fan when driving and even standing in front of the car you can only just hear it - on the other hand the engine bay fan is very noisy and one is immediately aware when that starts so do check that it is the rad fan you can hear. |

I second what Ted advises - even having two rad fans (with aircon) it is almost undetectable inside the cabin, unlike the engine bay fan. It is much easier to get at the engine bay temp sensor to disconnect it - which will switch on the fan if you want to identify which one made the sound. |

Hi, I drove home at 70 and not a single glitch - all seemed fine. I believe the fan I hear was the radiator - I had my ear to the ground near the front - I'll keep an eye on it... I'll try the sensor trick when I next get some days off - next problem is the steering - pulls to the left, got the tracking done (front only - waste of time) the garage said the rears had seized so I'll get a hot spanner out and loosen that off. the get it checked properly, Im sure the rear are out of line pushing the car to the left - it does it even with the PAS fuse out - so here's hoping anyway. Is your hydragas set at the correct level on both sides and are the tyres old? |
