MG MGF Technical - TF diesel: never?

Shall we never see a diesel TF version?
I think engine fit in zr could be fit in tf too, or not?

You would have to be bloody quick to catch it when it let's go with a diesel lump in the back! Regards.

Block will fit certainly - and the turbo is possible to package (do you remember a while ago when someone reported that they'd fitted the L-series diesel in their F?)

Problems will then circle around weight distribution. The K-series is incredible light: 100kg all up (dry weight). The L-series diesel is significantly heavier - at 184kg (dry weight)... easy maths here - that's 84% heavier...

Given that the F weighs in at around 1100 kg, with a 55% rear bias, putting an additional 100 or so kg over the rear axle is going to have quite an effect on the weight distribution. Moreover, the centre of gravity of the L-series is bound to be higher...

Basically what I am saying is to add weight to Roy's comments: handling is going to be adversely effected. You'd need to have completely different springs/dampers/antiroll bars to make the car work...

I actually think that there could be a market for a diesel open top MG sports car - but I don't think that the L-series is the engine of choice. :o/

Talking of diesels. Does any body have any experiance of the aftermarket market tuning products. The sort of thing that Tuning Concept produce.

Are those alarm bells I hear?

Steve - probably isn't much experience on these boards with diesel tuning (for obvious reasons!) - by the MG Rover forum (www.mg-rover.org) - and look under the performance tuning section.

Diesel=Nasty Idea ...
Somehow getting the KV6 into the F great idea...we've been here already though and for some unfathomable reason it hasnt been done.

The K2000 engine is on George Mackmurdie of RSM's shopping list as a fit to an F
...errr that'll go!

>>Diesel=Nasty Idea ...<<
Why are the likes of Lotus looking at diesels then ?
Most of us will probably own diesel cars (even diesel motorcycles) in the future.
Some are very good now - try the current BMW turbo-diesels.

I'm sure it has been done.
I just think maintenance costs will be prohibitively high with too many jobs requiring engine removal.

Personally, I don't think we'll see a (turbo-)diesel TF; the TF's main market is the UK and the market's not ready yet here.
Steve

As I understood it that to fit the KV6 engine into the existing space requires the relocation of the fuel tank - to where?

No room in the front and one does not want to sacrifice the boot space and on top of that, in either place it would probably mean that car would the fall foul of safety regulations

The KV6 *might* fit without need to relocate the fuel tank - but the passenger cell bulk head would need a little 'reprofiling'. But as John alludes, simple jobs like changing the spark plugs on the front bank of cylinders would be a total nightmare...

K2000 is the way to go, no doubt.
