Roy, sounds bad news. Have you had it confirmed yet by a dealer or specialist? Is it still warranty?

If confirmed it shows that none of us can sleep too easily at night. Mine is 1996 and "touch wood" OK so far.
JohnP

Still under warranty, thankfully.Mechanic looked and said "Don't drive it,go and book it in and we'll fix you up with a car".Have asked him to order the parts to up-date to the pressure sensitive 'stat while it's in bits, another £200 down the Swanee! Wish I was rich enough to set fire to it outside the gates of Longridge. Still, I've heard whispers that the MX5 replacement is a TF clone.Roll on!!

Hi,

I'm sorry for you. *things happen*
Would be great to register at the famous hall of shame.

The fifth of TF if I counted right.

They are rare with HGF though.

Why should you pay for the upgrade to pressure sensitive thermostat? It may interest you to hear that all current Freelanders suffering from HGF during the warranty period automatically get upgraded to this thermostat arrangement for FREE. All other LR owners also have their cars upgraded - although they usually have to pay for the parts.

I'd suggest you discuss this with your dealership. Clearly your car is covered by warranty - so why should you have to pay the additional 250 quid for the hoses and thermostat?

Great idea (what else)
See on top of Rob's site what to ask for.

Rob, thanks for your comments, I didn't know that LR were offering the 'mod free with warranty HGF's.I think that is a fair and logical approach. My dealer thought I had little chance of getting just a "parts only" deal.I'll certainly be pursuing it tomorrow. Regards.
H.R. Bridge

Do new TFs come with this mod then, and when did the change take place?

Steve.
Steve Windram

Steve TF's started being fitted with new set up as standard Jan/Feb 2003. Regards.

Does HGF mean engine out for the replacement? and what is the cost of the parts needed? My 1998 VVC has just gone bang!

Thanks in advance...

Chris.
Chris

No need for the engine to come out, but it's a 5 or 6 hourish task at best. so labour is the big cost, not parts. Typical costs range from £300-£650 for a straightforward case. If you have an oil/water mix, then cleaning up the engine will take more time. If you have additional damage caused by overheating e.g. a warped head then you are looking at additional costs of course.

Does anyone know at what VIN number the new thermostat was introduced at?
Neil Courtney

Neil, unfortunately, the catalogues that I've had access to give no clue as to at what VIN the new thermostat arrangement was introduced :o( Taken at face value, the implication was that ALL TFs used this thermostat - but that plainly is not the case.

Roy, any luck with your HGF replacement/ obtaining the new thermostat?
Rob Bell

The information that I have is that the PRT was introduced from Jan'03 onwards. That gives you a rough guide, but without a VIN threshold it's all still a guess.

Rob, when I rang yesterday, was told by reception "Mechanic say's tell you everything is in hand"?????? Left it at that, don't want dummies flying out of prams. Will ring again later today
