MG MGF Technical - TF160 rear pad confusion

Was changing the rear disks and pads on the 160 tonight and discovered the pads the local factors had supplied were too small. Now heres the weird thing..... The guy in the shop assured me the rear pads were the same for the TF 115, 135 and 160. He was adamant ( or rather his computer was ).

When measured up against a friends old pads from his 135 - the new pads matched his .....but the actual width ( i.e the surface area which would be in contact with he disk ) was about half of the pads on the 160. So..... what should I be asking for ? as Im sure the next shop will probably try and fob me off with the smaller pads again ! ? !

Just looked at Rimmer Bros catalogue and they list 2 types of front pads = one set for models exc trophy and TF160 and one set ONLY for Trophy and TF160 due to the bigger brakes ........... BUT............. rear pads ALL MODELS ? ....NO NO NO NO NO there is a difference and I have a witness to prove it. Where oh where can I find the correct pads ?

Is it the pad or the backplate that is a different size? The backplate should be identical, however there can be a difference in the pad shape/size from manufacturer to manufacturer. If a harsher compound has been used, the contact area needn't be as big, or it could start upsetting the balance of the braking force at each end of the car.

The backplate was also around half the size.

There is only ONE pad for the rear calipers that suits ALL MGF and TF models, irrespective of engine output.

I suspect that the difference you are seeing is either related to the wrong pad being brought out of stores, or a change in the pad manufacturer, and therefore specification...

Interesting - whats the point in having a disk with about 4 inches of area for the disk pad to contact to and then give you a pad with about an inch and half of area to contact the disk - if you can follow that lol it means about only a 3rd of the actual disk area is being used ? is this consistent with everybody elses ? Ive owned over 50 cars and on each the pad and disk are almost the same width with maybe a half inch each side at most of the contact area unused. Seems to me the MGF/TF rear disks are a lot larger than need be in relation to the pad size. Wasted steel IMHO.

The Mintex pads I use are the full size of the backing plate (or nearasdammit) and make good use of the available disc area.

The pads you've been looking at sound 'wrong' if you know what I mean...

http://www.mgfcar.de/epc/937.htm
lists some aftermarket pad no's. and they< all should be the same size.
Wherein, I recall having seen some with notch and other without notch.
