MG MGF Technical - Thermostat ?

52 reg TF 160 .......... temp gauge goes from cold to normal temp literally within 2 minutes even if the car hasnt been started in days , at normal temp get cold air blowing from heater. Seem to get hot air from the heater when driving @ 2krpm+ .......slow down and the temp goes cold. The cold / hot heater knob is connected and working as when driving and getting hot air, I can move the knob from hot to cold to hot and the temp changes. Coolant level is fine and constant with no contamination. Family brainstorming seems to think thermostat ??? If so how much for one and how easy / difficult for me to fit on a sunday afternoon ??
D Jamieson

it wont be thermostat, that wouldn't make the car heat up quick, the cold air sounds like an airlock somewhere, overcome when you rev the engine... not sure

nope you've got me, but it really doesn't sound like a thermostat
Will Munns

WIll do you think I should first have a go at doing the 3 bleeding points before panicking ?
D Jamieson

yes, most definatly.

Will Munns

if it helps, it doesn't sound like your typical hgf

but as is the case with these engines, if the cooling system isn't working well, it will become a hgf sooner rather than later.

Good luck - I'm intrigued to find out what it might be
Will Munns

Sounds like a partially blocked heater matrix or pipe either to or from it.
C.R.B. Simeon

Sounds like coolant isn't circulating, as that would fit the symptoms you describe with localised heating causing the temp guage to move quickly (or could be just faulty sender )

Do you see cooland flowing into the header tank from the top hose ?

Usually you see a steady strong stream flowing round, but as Will says most likely due to an airlock/ blockage.

Bled the system via the 3 bleed points - SORTED.
