MG MGF Technical - thermostat location

Is it just me looking in the wrong location or is the thermostat located in an impossible to get to position? Aside from taking the engine out or having 3 foot arms, 6 elbows and hands the size of an action man is there a simple way? I'm looking where a wide rubber pipe meets the engine towards the right hand side a few inches behind the belt covers.

I fear you are nearly right.
Looks like the car was build around the thermostat.

You could get there with 2 hands only if you have an MGF none VVC with plastic inlet manifold.
I've changed the thermostat the other year and nearly broke my elbows ;)

Remove the oil dipstick assy for easier access and get a second person who pulls like mad at the pipework later.
Small ratchet with universal bit required aswell for the three hexagon screws.

Changing the thermostat is made possible with an 8mm halfords professional rarchet spanner.

There are three bolts in the thermostat cover, and another 2(?) supporting the pipe that runs around the engine.

When you remove the thermostat housing you will find that the thermostat is fitted inside the housing, pry it out carefully so you dont put pressure on the plastic and when you refit the new make sure it is not going to be pinched when you o up the bolts (don't bother asking me how I know!)

The job is difficult, but nowhere near impossible, you do have to see with your fingertips for a lot of it.
