MG MGF Technical - Tin Worm
Our F is approaching its 9th year having owned it from new and driven it in all weathers the body work is starting to show the odd spot of rust, but not bad considering the use. I can see blistering around both wing mounted indicators and a few very small crows feet around stone chips to the leading edge of the wings above the bumper seam. Any ideas where the tin work may be hiding in not so visable areas? |

Terry. My F will be 10 in a few months, when I got her 2 years ago the only signs of rust were as yours, ie one side repeater and a few stone chips!. Not to bad for an 8 year old car, but as I have the odd access to a 2 poster ramp, when I got underneath the tin-worm was a little further advanced!. Nothing to serious, but both front and rear chassis legs had a lot of surface rust, which was soon sorted with a wire brush and a coat of waxoil, but less obvious was the clutch pivot arm near the base of the gearbox, this was VERY rusty, and is known for failing on older cars as the sealed bearing seizes!. A good clean, coat of Hammerite, and plenty of greese not only improved future protection, but had the added benifit that the clutch operation was much lighter!. :o) HTH. |

There are a few one-owner from new, nearly approaching 10 year old cars on this BBS aren't there! LOL Mine hasn't got any body work rust that I can find (built in December 95). However, the subframes did have a fair bit of surface rust - but TS sorted that out at a previous service :o) One area that can cause problems - other than the area around the indicator it seems - is a potential mud trap behind the plastic wheel arch liner and the sill closing panel at the rear of the front wheel arches. Lift the plastic cover, clean out and inspect. One other area of rust that I spotted on Kingsley's car whilst it was last up at TS was bubbling corrosion from the right side of the high level brake light trim. Anyone else have this? Not very attractive :o( |

Rob and all, I had a good look around Richards car at Longbridge, No 72 off the line, he had a very slight area of early rusting just starting to appear along the horizontal seam of the boot lid. Other than that, nothing apparent. Danny's pre-propduction car (the Geneva one) had none at all, but it had only done 2330 miles ! Adrian |

The Green Squirrel has no tin (or wood) worm that I can see - but - she has been garaged most of her 'resting' life - ten in February 06! |

Rob. IIRC our vin numbers are quite close!! Mine also built December 95, reg first week 96! 2516 ;0) |

Hi Terry, Snap.! I have been getting quotes to get it sorted but the 4 I have have all amounted to a re-spray. I keep being told as it is a metallic they cannot patch and blend. The prices have been high to say the least. Into the early 4 figures. Do you have a plan to get it all sorted? A. |
