MG MGF Technical - Tizz!

No, not the Tazmanian Devils younger brother, but the exhaust complaint.

Probably directed at Rob and Dieter.

Having read about the Tizz Bracket for fitment to the Exhaust Manifold and the block on Dieters site and having heard some chat on the Elise boards over the last few weeks, I just wanted to know what does 'Tizz' Sound like. Is is a continuous Buzz or a venting noise, is it intermittent or constant.

aaaaaah I think I have this too? sort of a quiet tinkly ticking sound, sounds like the exhaust is tapping ever so slightly against something? goes away when ragging or music turned up ;)
Colin Ashworth

I think that Dieter's your man Tim; I've not experienced this noise on my car before...

BTW I thought that the Liz 'Tizz' was a different noise to the one on the F - that eminating from the underbody diffuser panel???
Rob Bell

Rob, I'm pretty sure that the Liz Tizz is the an Exhaust problem. The 'Dieter' Bracket is refered to at a 'Tizz Bracket'.

I was curious as to what sound 'Tizz' was as I think this is what I was experiencing up until the other day. At 2500 rpm I heard what must be call a 'tixx' sound coming from the exhaust. Only at 2500 no higher, no lower and in each gear except for first (?). Bit anoying when stuck in slow moving traffic.

In my case I discovered that the flexipipe had become disconnected from its support bracket, and when reattached the noise went. Rather odd I know, but may be there was a rotational force causing one joint of the exhaust system to vent at 2500rpm, possibly from the exhaust manifold and this would explain the need for the 'Tizz bracket'

Hi Tim,
I had a funny noise like pinking at my old MGF and this was fixed by that bracket between engine block and manifold flange.
A thread in the archives about *pinking* from 1999 should bring up the story about P/N GEX13002.

http://www.mgfcar.de/exhaust_bracket/index.htm

It happened only at hot engine and then under load only. I.e when hard accelerating while going uphill.
The bracket was introduced by official as solution regarding *rattling noise from exhaust* with a bulletin.

Though, I still believe it was an early try of MGR to prevent the head from *shaking* sidewards and decrease risk of HGF.
btw. had none. Not at my old and not at my current MGF since nearly 80.000 km :)

Regards
Dieter

Mmmmm, so the noise I heard could have been 'Tizz', Interesting.

Thanks Dieter.

So is this bracket now fitted as standard to, say, TFs??

SimonKE

....or is it a case of, if you know about the fix and mention it, then we'll fit it for you (FOC??)?? Otherwise we're gonna keep schtoooom!!
SimonKE

Yep - that's pretty much it Simon.

I guess their opinion is along the lines of "there's no point in attempting to fix a non-existant problem" - and there isn't a problem unless you report it.
Rob Bell

>if you know about the fix and mention it, then we'll fit it for you

This was, but I can speak for year 1999/2000 only.
BEFORE MGR company *owner* changed.
