Assuming that you don't have incedibly wide feet I'd look at the carpet around the pedals first and then search the archive and check out the brake light switch. You need to go in head first, face up and then get somebody to pull you back out afterwards.

John,

Thanks for the comments !! What exactly am i looking for and what do i do when i get there ?? Your talking to the most untechnically minded person on the planet now !!!

Cheers,

Tony,
how old is your car?
It may be a worn brake light switch. Is situated on top of the pedal. They aren't expensive and fairly easy to fit.
Ddraig

I reckon that this could be the brake light switch as well - might be its automatic adjustment is out. Remove the switch, pull the plunger out to reset the ratchet adjustment, and refit. Should do the job. :o)

HARD, basicly untill you think you've broken it 8-O

Tony- search archive for brake switch. Here's a few to whet your appetite:

Thanks guys,

Had a go at it about an hour ago !! You were'nt wrong about it being a awful job.

Picture the seen, me upside down, legs in the air, cars in the street driving past and trying to fiddle without a torch !! Looked hilarious to passers by !!

I think I've done it as I tested it afterwards and was ok. I removed the switch, pressed the plunger and depressed the brake and replaced the switch and then released the pedal and seems to be ok, for now :-) (fingers crossed !!)

Thanks for the comments !! Hopefully no more problems !!

Nice one Tony - one of those jobs that is 'easier said than done' ;o)

Rob,

Your right, just wish they were all that straightforward !!

Lets just hope I've done it right.

Thanks again to all.

This is a lovely works location, isn't it ?

We've all been there Tony.

> pressed the plunger

You have to pull the plunger, so hard you think you've broken it when it finally gives.

Don't worry, it's less work the second time ;-)
Will Munns

Will,

Just doubled checked it and pulled as hard as I could and did give a little noise so think I've definitely done it right now. Followed your instructions regarding release and depress of brake pedal and everything seems ok. Had a torch this time so got to see just how the mechanism actually works !!!

Pete, that's the first time I've had my legs upside down in the car !!
Was kinda hoping for something rather more pleasurable than fixing a switch !! :-)

Cheers to all,

Tony

Tony, If you didn't think you'd broken it, then you prolly didn't pull hard enough, keep an eye out for flickering roadsigns behind you, and enjoy people keeping their distance ;-)

Had the same problem ... mine kept re-occurring until I changed the switch to the newer design.
