MG MGF Technical - Too much play when door shut

Just had new window stops fitted on the drivers door but now with the window down the door does not shut very firmly, ie. it knocks when i go over bumps and there is a fair degree of play if i move it when it is closed. Is this the lock mechanism thats moved when they adjusted the window, can it be easily rectified. It used to shut it with a germanic clunk but now its irritating as hell.

has the door lost it’s little rubber stopper?

which one, i can see two and the dog leg shaped rubber clip where the window glass meets the top of the door?
DM Wood

sounds like you had a problem covered up by the window, you need some star bits, then draw round the catch on the body with an OHP non-permenent pen, losten (DO NOT REMOVE) the bolts, reposition using line as a guide & tighten, 5 mins max.
Will Munns

cheers Will, just to confirm i've got this right, I am going to reposition the 'D' catch on the body of the car (not door) by loosening the star screws, but keeping the original position marked with an ohp marker line should it make the problem worse?

Is it not more likely that the lock catch (in the door aperture) has been moved whilsst adjusting the window glass or is that what you mean?

if only i had one of those tablet PCs a picture is worth a thousand words and all that.

Nope keeping the original so you can see how it liked up when you undo the screws and it all goes floppy.

Im pretty sure there is no adjustment on the catch side, I recon that the extra pressure the glass was pressing was enough to keep the door from knocking.

You want to be able to wash off the OHP pen when you are happy you've cured the problem.

Oh and when you buy the star bits, get a set which is big enough to undo the seat bolts, you never know when you'll next need to do it.
Will Munns

How would the window exert any pressure on the catch mechanism or any other part of the door when fully down?

I think i get a better idea what you mean now but just to be sure -

1. draw an erasable line round the D catch on the car body to remember the original position.

2. loosen the star bolts (cheers for the tip with the purchase by the way).

3. given that there is excess lateral play and the door seems slightly proud when closed, i will probably have to move the 'D' catch towards the interior of the car slightly.

4. tighten the star bolts retaining 'd' catch in new position.

5. trial and error adjustments of the 'd' catch until satisfied when closing the door.

Does that sound right to you?
DM Wood

Spot on.

The trouble with noises is that you might well have been hearing them for a while, but somthing else niggles you and untill you fix the something else, then the knock which might be say an umbrella in the glove compartment goes unnoticed. But when you know it's there it becomes all too apparent, like lables that arn't tucked in, or food stuck to someones teeth.
Will Munns

Its a valid point you make Will if only they made magic MG 'toothpicks' that would remove those MGF'ing niggles. I've owned the car less than 7 weeks and i'm exhausted with stress of owning the thing, and i thought I had a high maintenance girlfriend til she got the boot and i bought the F.

PS Will just been looking at the archives and something you said a little while ago gives my spirits a lift. Re: mayonaise which i have recently discovered small amounts of on the dipstick. You were saying doesn't always indicate impending HGF, I intend to give her a 50 mile motorway blast tonight see if it burns off. Can't take another trip to MGR to pay another months wages over.
DM Wood

Good luck David, if you're not loseing water then I would be less worried, if you are then I would make sure you have AA breakdown cover, in fact I would go as far as taking out a warrenty to steady your nerves.
Will Munns

I hate to poor water on this solution guys but its a bit radicle.. If god forbid it is a hgf you could do loadz damage..

Why not drain the oil, flush the engine and replace with new oil.. If this then shows signs of mayo you know there is a problem...

Could work out alot cheaper if there is a prob!
