MG MGF Technical - Transmission / driveshaft noise

I have posted this seperately to my misfire thread to keep the advice seperate.

I have recently got a new noise from my TF. It is related to movement, and to those old enough to remember, it sounds like a worn driveshaft / UJ on a Triumph Spitfire. It's worse when engine braking or coasting.

For the younger members, the tempo is similar to having a stone caught in your tyre tread (ie it's slower when teh car travells slowly and speeds up as the car gets faster). But it's not a hit type sound, ie somethin sticking out a hitting anther part as it moves. It's more resonant than that. Try saying dug, dug, dug, dug, dug... and that is sort of the sound. It appears to be more rear offside, but it's difficult to tell.

It doesn't sound like a clicking wheel bearing and, with the wheels on terra firma at least, I can't feel any wheel movement. Track rods, and tie bars all seem properly connected. Brakes don't seem to be binding or wheels rubbing.

Any suggestions?
David M

A bulge or flat spot on the tyre? What happens to it with light pedal braking?
Charles

Tyres look fine, no vibration. Light or heavy braking has no discernable difference, no apparent binding and she stops straight and true.
David M

If it sounds like a UJ could it be the CV joint
Dave

CV joint or perhaps something really simple like a trapped stone?
Rob Bell

Rob,
definitely not a trapped stone. It's not a tap sound, and it has that distinctive metallic resonance.

ANy suggestions as to how I can test for CV failure?
David

It's been suggested it could be a loose hub nut (ooh er missus). Anyone care to comment
David m

Well it doesn't seem to be a loose hub nut. They were all very tight.
Unfortunately it appears to be getting worse. I guess if I can'tfind teh problem it wil lhave to go into a garage. Trouble is finding one you can trust, that's not in the Midlands or further north.
David M

Have you jacked up each rear wheel & turned it? In my experience that will identify CV joint failure, and you'd be able to feel for bearing slack/irregularity.
