MG MGF Technical - Trev Taylor Exhausts

Would anybody be interested if I got the Trevor Taylor pipes my F is us graced with remanufacturered?

I would do it as a non profit making operation

Neil

Neil,

I did make a comment about your 'pipes' at the MGF10 ;-D

Nice noises. I guess I could be tempted. Would there be the possibility of some nice shiny tail pipes too with that and also any sort of idea what the cost would be roughly?

Fiona
Fiona

Tail pipes are available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes - and are cheap too - thanks largely to our Mulberry-clad chums. I am sure that anything that Neil has made can be fitted with any tail pipe you fancy.

When I had my Trevor Taylor system, I left them looking like bare scaffold poles. Suited the brutal nature of the system perfectly IMO. :o)
Rob Bell

If enough people are interested Fiona we could get somebody to replicate what is on my car.

The Industrial Chic of the exhausts I think it part of its charm, nobody else has brutal pipes jutting out of the back, more Fangio than Darren!

I guess they could be polished up on a wheel!!

Whatever anybody else says about performance etc etc, these pipes are way ahead in the noise stakes. Everything else is a bit soprano
Neil

Hi Neil,

Have you got any photo's of them online at all?

Cheers,

Kris
Kris Ford

IF they could be made in Mk2 fitment to go an a TF and weren't so loud I would have problems passing track sound tests, and the price is right then I could be interested LOL
Steve White

Kris here's some pics. This is where the Apocalypse starts guys!

http://www.mgfcar.de/exhaust_fxtreme/

Steve I've done a few track days with it got through no probs sans cat. rev told me it just scraped thriugh when we built the prototype, which is on my car still.

PLUS utterly wicked noise!!

Neil

Of course if we make them again I would want to make...you guessed it...a few mods.

To the weld positions actually.

ps sorry about last post makes me look illiterate
Neil

Hi Neil,

first time i've seen pics of the extreme, and it seems to be a much more sensible idea than the original - and all the others - with the gas flow split after the silencer. i guess from the shape of the join that the pipe that returns across the car is largely redundant - is that so?

and btw, how much are you looking at?

cheers

mike
mike

Mike you are completely right the pipe which comes out of the left hand side is largely redundant but is still connected and makes interesting gurgly noises.

Trev and I designed it to be far more sensible. The diameter of the pipe is constant from the collector box all the way through so theoretically can stand huge gas flow without hinderance, also there should be no nasty shock waves going back to the engine.

Dr Bob and co did some tests on them years ago and the TT pipe came out ok in power terms but Numero Uno in sound terms, which is really what this is all about.

The link above has some sound files to download but please note that that car has an old cat still. Without the car we are talking ride of the Valkeries!

Costs, I'll have to find out, but a target price of £200 cant be far off the mark!

Neil

So hands up !
who would be interested?

N
Neil

If you can get that'll fit a TF for 200 notes then I'll have one :D
Steve W

Anyone else?

I have a manufacturer lined up

Fiona?

N
Neil

Neil,

Will give you a definite answer in the next day or two....

cheers
Fiona :-<>
Fiona

Hi there i am intrested and i think a mate will be but first i have tryed to have a look at the vids on the website but they do not work it look like the files are not there cab these emailed to me and i will let you i think that i will but how long will it take for them to be made (estermated if you can) but they look like a good 200 well spent.

Cheers

Al
Al

That's good, I will confirm the exact cost when I know what it is.

I reckon this design is the ultimate for our car though. THE NOISE,it's MAGNIFICENT!

Neil

I have a couple of questions...

What material is it to be made out of and also would there be a guarantee on it?

Also - in your opinion Neil - what's the sound like when you put your foot down? I heard it when you were pootling round the car park at Gaydon (magnificent I thought!) .... but whats it like at speed?

Cheers
Fiona :-()
Fiona

Still deep sounding, I think.
http://www.mgfcar.de/exhaust_fxtreme/MGF_speedup.html
Dieter

That looks and sounds great.

I'll take one I think (with delivery to Germany).
Chris Heinrich Perkins

I had a Trevor Taylor Fxtreme system on my car for a few years - loved it. It is, for sure, LOUD. If you have a cone filter, you'll get resonances, so it is worth enclosing the filter system, or upgrading to an ITG etc. And then add some additional sound deadening to the parcel shelf panel ;o)

The system, without doubt, sounds best when idling - and then you blip the throttle... wow!

On a constant cruise, it remains audible at all times. Whether you'll find this wearing or not depends on your personal thresholds, but I had no problem driving for hours and hours at a time.

This system is not exhaust 'lite' - quite the opposite - max fat, max salt, max nicotine. It should probably come with a health warning - but this is all part of the attraction for many :o)
Rob Bell

Taking time out from Volvo Cars, which is where I am at the moment. I will write another thread to MGF General too.

I will remake you guys new ( and improved on the originals) FExtreme pipes if I can get 10 orders.
In bulletproof high quality stainless steel.

Fiona the noise is sublime, just forget the rest!
I went through the Dartford tunnel at 4.50am this morning on way to Stansted. it's worth the £1 toll just for the music!! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
At higher speeds the noise tends to be drowned out by other wind noises etc ...unless you are in a tunnel.

Price confirmed at £200 a pop!

Place your orders Please
Neil

Hi Neil,

Mine's a 2001 car, so has the TF style 'bent pipe' cat with a second sensor.

are you planning to build a system that removes the cat? and if so what's the plan for MK2 cars with the second sensor and the engine warning light? or are you planning a post cat system, in which case you'll need a mk1 and a mk2/TF design?

if you can do a mk2 post cat system, i'm interested!

cheers

mike

mike

Neil,

Could it not be manufactured with tailpipes of my choice?

I have a fetish for shiny ones you see!

Seriously, I'm practically sold on the idea, just an issue with the tailpipes for me...

Fiona :-L

PS you will haveto speak slowly and clearly to me re exhausts, I have very little knowledge of them..
Fiona

Neil,

Actually forget the above - just need to know the diameter of the pipes you're going to have made - is it a standard 2"?

Anyway put me down for one. I'll have to sell a handbag or two but one must make sacrifices...

Fiona :-D
Fiona

@Chris,

have a look to this thread back in 2000
http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&access=&mode=archiveth&subject=69&subjectar=69&thread=200012041312277365

I recall Martin got head aches :)
The Trevor is aswell very special if you have the hardtop on.

btw, [Offtopic for Chris].
You were right recently with the side coding of electric mirrors.
Had a look to mine from an R25 and found the same different cambered fixture.
BUT.. the fixture plate is _equal_ in proncipals at both sided mirrors. It's just turned circular by 180. This means someone skilled can dismatle the mirror and turn the fixture plate in either drivers side or co drivers side as needed
[offtopic end]

Regards
Dieter
PS. hmmmmmm, 200 is a bargain, isn't it ? Who can carry some to DE ?
Dieter

OK so Fiona wants one
Steve Wants one
have I missed anybody Dieter?...?

Thanks I am aware of the differences between the F and the TF pipes, we plan to develop 2 solutions, the same in every way apart from the "in" pipe. My F will be the prototype for the rest of the exhaust.
Yeah £200 is a bargain!

If I put them up on Ebay with a buy it now for £199.75 ...what do you reckon?
Neil

Good idea Neil - but investigate shipping costs - you may get orders from outside Europe! :o)
Rob Bell

Thanks Rob, of course that will ba an additional cost for the buyer
Neil

>have I missed anybody Dieter ?...?

Interest for my own MGF stands behind probable big shouts of Rosi ;) I think she would scalp me. So I better leave it out for me.
Getting sold some here is another question.

Dieter

Hold your horses everybody

I am asking another supplier, if he can make one-offs then we are in business!

Anybody else got some decent shots of this exhaust?

Neil

Any idea how loud this is db's I am thinking about track day noice limits? I think my old Miltek Supersport is either 95 or 98 db @ half full revs. Which in on the limit for some tracks.

Steve
Steve Ratledge

Trevor told me it was 96db. I have never had any problems on track events, but last time the dozy scrutineer stuffed the noise meter next to the quiter left hand side exhaust pipe...ooh look 86 db...Ha ha!

Noise is one thing, but Music is another!

;¬)

Neil

Just saw this thread and I have to ask the question. Can anyone get free product advertising on this BBS or do you still have to pay for the advert on the banner?
Parts Trader

I've a 98 vvc and would consider this exhaust. Is it very esy to put on the car or do we take to the local garage and ask them to fit? Thanks
Martin

So long as your car has the earlier exhaust. It isn't too much of a problem the only issue is that the nuts used to attach the cat to the pipe can be a total Beaitch to remove. Thanks MGR that really wasnt necessary!.
I replaced mine with some pretty fundemental and massive nuts and bolts, so much easier to remove! I can now take off my exhaust in under 10 minutes without even jacking the car up!

Neil

Fiona, Steve, Mike, Al, Deiter, and Chris in Germany.

I am now taking deposits for the pipe, we are nearly at the magic 10 !

Please contact me at the following email address
neil.willetts@cornwell.co.uk. with your full contact details and car specs.

Neil

Neil - I may well be up for this as well. What are the chances of popping over to your place (in Surrey) to have a listen?

I am just down the road in Hampton.

If I go for this I could reduce my overall expenditure by reselling the Miltek.

Cheers
Steve
Steve Ratledge

These will be better than the originals too
Featuring shiney stainless parts
modified bends and pipe placement.

Neil

56mm mate (roughly 2 1/4")

I tried to call but got some Sweedish bird on your phone number (she sounded kinda nice, but it was probably a computer! LOL :-D ).

SF
Scarlet Fever

Bleuurg Laptop failure!

SF did you want the 3" end pipes?

Neil

Neil,

No mate, i'm gonna use my Phoenix tailpipe finishers (hence the 56mm diameter dimension). Kind of a 'stealth' system... ;-)

SF
SF

The pipe is made of 2 1/4 pipe which is a standard sort of diameter. The should fit
Neil

If anyone else wants, like SF, to add Phoenix finishers I have a redundant set of slash cut round finishers in great nick.
Dave Livingstone

Hi everybody. so the project ensues!

everybody who has ordered a TT pipe will receive in the next few days a confirmation of their order direct via email. I will be asking for the remainder of the money at that time. £100 for those choosing the original bazooka ends £150 for the 3inch blunderbus ends.

Neil

Ladies and Gentlemen who ordered these pipes please forward the remainder of the cash.

we move ahead!

Neil
Neil

Dave you have mail re the finishers ;o))

Darren
DarrenB

Neil, I've not had a 'confirmation' email yet. Shall I just send you the money anyway?
Its not looking likely it will be on in time for the F reg natter now though :(
Steve White

Neil,

Ive not had a confirmation email either.

Cheers
Fiona
Fiona

... did emails got lost in France ??
Dieter

Sorry everybody, the day job got in the way. Also I had a major laptop incedent/issue!
The exhausts are in now in production to the specifications discussed with each of you.
I am hoping to get them all made before Xmas.
Some of you will need delivery I am looking into that
Once I have the costs of delivery confirmed I will inform you of the amount outstanding.

Those who intend to pick up the pipes from my house could now send me their remaining cheque.
