MG MGF Technical - Trophy Hydrogas Displacers
Having had a rear hydragas unit fail on my MGF at the MG International Event in Germany. I'm considering if it is worth while changing all four units for new unit, if I do so I could fit Trophy units to replace my standard F units. Is this a worth while modification, will I notice any difference, good or bad, I believe the unit will lower the car slightly. My car is already fitted with standard MG Rover Trophy Dampers. PS. Thanks to Dieter and all who tried to help us out in Speyer, our car arrived home on the back of a truck last night, courtesey of the AA International Recovery Insurance. |

The Trophy units have IIRC lower gas pressure, which increases the spring rate. Do the Trophy units come with the modified flow restrictors? That's also a factor - the Trophy units are designed to have less fluid flow fore-aft. |

Depending on the cost, personally I do think that the swap to Trophy units would be worth while - particularly if you are after a sportier drive. I'd also go for Bilstein dampers (Trophy dampers aren't any better engineered than the standard items, and tend to over-stiffen the front end IMO). Mike's right; the Trophy units do use rather different flow regulator valves (which alter spring and damper rates), and I also suspect that the displacer cones are a different profile (Dieter may have pictures and specs on his website if you have a look Dave) Hope this helps |

There was some confusion over if the knuckles are different between the Trophy and the std F can you help me clear this up? I believe the last comment I read said they were the same, although I believe Rob's web site says they are different. |

See measurements on Dieter's webpage: http://www.mgfcar.de/hydragas/compare.htm The standard and Trophy displacer skirts are similar, but perhaps not exactly the same... Either way, if obtaining 'new' hydragas spheres, ensure that you get all these components as well. BTW I believe it was the knuckles that the previous conversation centred around? Either way, it appears that teh Trophy knuckle has a separate part number - listed here: http://mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/suspension/model_specific_suspension.htm Oddly, this part number is not mentioned in the on line parts catalogue? |

Thanks Rob, think I'll stick with the standard unit then, and maybe look to spend my money on some Techspeed dampers instead. |
