MG MGF Technical - Trophy Rear boot spoiler ?.

Has any one fitted the above?.
Got one on order, New with fixings, but no destructions!. Is it just bolted through the bottom of the lid?!.
Mark.L

I'm an Accountant/IT person Mark, not an Engineer but ...

surely it bolts through the top of the lid?

I've got a boot spoiler on my F. Brand of spoler unknown but the pervious owner had the "smart" idea of using double-sided adhesive tape to mount it on the boot!

Guess i'm lucky he didn't use superglue or bluetack!
JW Ioannou

I bought my spoiler from Mike Satur and fitted it my self which literally took 10 mins to drill 4 holes in boot. That was after waiting a week to get it painted.

The MGF OEM Spoiler requires two bolt holes to be drilled. On removing the two rear rubber grommets in the boot lid, a drilling bush is fitted to drill holes at the centre of the grommet hole.

I've not ever fitted a bootlid spoiler Mark, so can't really advise from experience. However, what is critical is positioning on the boot lid - and in particular making sure it is central and equally positioned from the trailing edge of the 'lid.

To centralise, try using a plumb line (with the car on level ground), with the line falling through the centre of the MG badge. If you mark the centre of the spoiler (measured) with some masking tape, I suspect that the job will be made easier.

Only other advise I can give is the age old words: measure once, measure twice, drill once.

Good luck!

YEP ,agrre e with Rob, make sure it is plum before drilling the 4 holes, you may try a few times back and forth to where actually fit when when get then place you think looks best then make your marks, i was trembling when started to drill mine in case i slipped and scraped drill bit all along boot lid ha ha, good luck Mark and some pics when done ok, Dave

Thanks Guys!.
There are several spoilers available for the F, the one I have on order is one fitted to the Trophy( looks same as olivers), Was wondering as it is an MGR part there may have been something in the bootlid ready to take it?.( As geoff says), which is why I asked the question!.

Rob, Will be checking your site as am fitting Trophy splitter at same time, when I get the two painted!.

Thanks again.

Perhaps you can tell me what it will all cost then??.
:o)
Mark.L

Mark,
The instructions that I have are for in fact a two stud and nut fitting to Part no. DFD106710.

First estimate is "an arm & a leg" but you must consider that depreciation will bite hard as soon as you put it on the car.

The Trophy spoiler as fitted OE has a reinforcing bracket thats fitted to the underside of the bootlid.

That link doesn't appear to work Joe?
Rob Bell

Thanks Joe, My boot lid does not have the supports in place as your pic, but as my F is pre Trophy, not realy a suprise!, not hard to make something like though would think!.
Mark.L

It might be worth checking if they available from main dealer.

I also have a Trophy spoiler awaiting painting and fitting, so any info on the installation would be much appreciated.

I did a search in the archives and found the part number for the fittings listed as "ESR 1650". Can anyone confirm this, and also whether that includes the triangular plate as shown in Joe's post above?
Ian Matheson

Ian,
Looking at the Triangular plate on Joes pic, it looks like its spot welded and Rivetted in place in the factory. It seems the spoiler bolts through the lid, and not through the lid frame, Hence the strenghening plate. Should be quite easy to make such a plate though!
Like you, am awaiting paint but if you get done first let us know, I will do likewise!.
Mark.L

Actually, I now remember someone mentioning that the Trophy bootlid is actually a different part number to the standard F - presumably it comes pre-drilled and with this plate welded in place.

Would any Trophy owners out there be willing to pop out to their car armed with a ruler/measuring tape and post the dimensions of the plate?? (A template would be even better if anyone can be bothered!!!)

Cheers!
Ian Matheson

My bootlid is at your disposal! I'll pop out there tomorrow

All the best

Hi all
If you want a sketch of the bracket in question, email 'idea at ukgateway dot net' and I'll send you a pdf.
D E Alexander

David - you've got mail!

Many thanks for taking the time to do this.

No problem Ian HTH
But no mail from you as yet... what I didn't say was take out all the spaces from my email address and replace 'at' and 'dot' with symbols - all for the sake of dodging spam!

Mark/Iain,

I fitted the Trophy boot spoiler to my F (MK1 - 98) 2 years ago and had held off for 6 months before that for the same reason.

There was a photo (http://www.mikesatur.co.uk/images/trophystylebootspoiler.gif) of the spoiler on the MS website and thats what I used to make the holes in the boot. My visual guide was that the spoiler feet extended the curve lines in the hi level brake light, this and a measuring tape did the job. To mark the position, masking tape was use to zone the drillled area followed by a black marker pen coated bolts leaving a spot. After drilling, the holes were cleaned and painted with clear laquer coat to stop rusting. The spoiler was then bolted in place using various washers (can't remember the size) and each bolt double nut'ed with the second nut being of the locking type.

Periodically I check that the spoiler is attached but so far they haven't moved (fingers crossed). I have to admit that my heat did stop a few times when drilling th holes lol.

Iain, your welcome to have a look at my car for measurements etc. unfortuantely I don't make many of the csmgf runs :o(

Cheers

David - thanks for the detailed 'sketch' of the plates. Do you have some kind of qualificaiton in tecnical drawing by any chance?! lol... I'll ask a friend to make up plates to your measurements and get him to weld them on.

Les - Thanks for the info on locating and fitting the spoiler. Once I'm ready to fit it, I may email you for a bit of moral support!
