MG MGF Technical - trophy spoiler v TF boot lid

Had a nice chat with Andy from VHS (formerly of MGR) re the benefits of a trophy spoiler over a TF bootlid. Apparently in wind tunnel tests at MGR the most advantageous set up (in order of performance) was 1. Lip spolier as per the hybrid TF, 2. trophy spoiler on F bootlid, 3. TF boot lid 4. F boot lid. Andy had a mocked up lip spoiler on his race TF and may consider manufacturing them in future.

oh yes, and he had also put in a bonnet scoop as per the hybrid TF and the Elise. Very effective and all you loose is the space for the spare wheel!

Just in case anyone doesn't know what the hybrid TF looked like here it is in all its glory during a visit to my workplace(glory except it had no coolant in its bottle so wasn't a runner at the time!) - http://www.mgcars.org.uk/carclub/mgfregister/200HPD/index.htm

I guess they only tested the lip spoiler on a TF bootlid? There's probably a bigger market if they produced them for the F.

Found myself eyeing some polystyrene coving in a builder's merchants, trying to work out whether there was a Blue Peter-esque project there...
Mike Hankin

Actually they tested it on an F bootlid. Dont know why Andy's TF has an F bootlid!

If they're looking into producing bonnets and TF bootlid spoilers, tell Andy I'm in. Have spoken to them in the past about their sprint car and the 200HPD aero package, and would be interested in employing it on my F in future (assuming that I can get it all looking as "standard OEM" as possible)

Given the quantum dynamics improvement my splitter made for my F, as recommended by VHS anything aero that they recommend I am up for. subtle small boot lip spoiler, painted flame red...nice

VHS said however that some of the boot spoilers on the TF and F do nothing for lift in fact they just act like a nasty airbrake!

Likewise the cutting of holes in the bonnet would have to be done very very carefully and beautifully as it could end up looking deeply sh*t. Also losing the spare tyre loses the ballast that it provides at the front of the car. SO be careful Bob, the 200HPD had a huge electric engine reminiscent of those found on the Northern line! So no ballast/balance issues there!

Mike ...don't !

I always liked the Hybrid F, you get the 200bhp, 4WD AND £0 congestion charging all in one. Given how many so called hybrids Toyota now sell what a shame MGR didnt get this car into production.

Neil

Andy's car has a deeper air duct in the bonnet than the Hybrid, presumably because there is no electric motor in the way. Does look a bit heath robinson mind! As to losing ballast, not sure its that necessary and anyway the increased down force from the scoop makes up for the less weight and the "lift" the old front generated.

Neil,

When you say that your splitter gave quantum dynamic improvements to your F, do you mean the change was imperceptibly and immeasurably minute?

Cheers
