MG MGF Technical - Trophy squeeking brakes Poll

Seeing many owners concerned I would be happy if you could answer this brief poll :)

[1] which Trophy owners did have problems with squeeking brakes at a point in time ?

[2] Has the problem been solved? If so how ?

[1] Me, Reg2002
[2] No

Thanks,
Thierry

My car is a 2001 Trophy 160.

Yep, squeaking brakes at low speeds (like when in traffic jams etc).

I asked the dealer to check it at service. They said the brakes were perfectly OK but were dirty, which could cause the squeaking. They stripped them down and cleaned them before refitting them, but after only a few weeks, the squeak is back.

I think those big brakes generate a lot of brake dust (just look at how quickly your front alloys get in a state) so the "dirtiness" builds up pretty quicky. Doesn't seem to affect performance of the brakes though.

The TF's have the same brakes, they have none of those problems (as far as I hard from dealers) but I hard of many trophy having this problem.

- new Mintex pads
- completely cleaned and greased

Didn't squeek for the first 3km, then did and never stoped since. RobB suggested worned discs (deformed) but this should feel when braking (studdering pedal)

Well, my TF 160's brakes have started to squeak at low speed.......
SimonKE

@SimonKE: Whoops, there goes my assumption. Thanks for the notics.

2001 Trophy, yup they squeal a bit, but it's not too intusive so have not done anything

2001 Trophy with not problems from the brakes.....

>> (Well, my TF 160's brakes have started to squeak at low speed.......)

.....it's only when one's JUST coming to halt and, altho' not every time, it's starting to become more regular.

Still, it's going in for its first service soon, so my friendly MGR dealer will no doubt cure it first go....

Hohohohohohohohohohohhohohohohohohohohohohoho.....teeheeteeheeteeheeteeheetee....!!!!!

Please tell me if he did, and If ask him how. (I doubt he will) :

My 2001 Trophy 160 had squeaky brakes for a short period, but that suddenly stopped.

AP Calipers, pads and disks recently replaced under warranty (corroded shim) about 2000 miles ago - no squeaks so far.

Welcome to MG ownership,..... we B owners have had this problem for years....sometimes copper grease on the back of the pads helps..sometimes shims....and I've even tried a funny glue that you spray on the back of the pad......I think modern brake pad materials have made the problem worse.... I'm using a Kevlar reinforced pad on my V8 and it's almost always squeeky when cold...I sometines have to drive with the brake pedal on for a while to warm up the pads to shut them up.

My TF160 has started having squeeky brakes. Happens 90% of the time at lowish speeds - typically stopping for Give Way junctions

2001 Trophy
Yes - most of the time!

2001 Trophy

No squeeks!

David, how many miles has yr TF160 covered???
SimonKE

2001 Trophy 160 no squeeks, mind you I find it difficult to here them from here.
Mike

TF160 just started squeeking (after track day at Donnington), 9000 miles. 1st service due later this month will get it sorted then.
Norman

My TF160 brakes have just started squeeking after 2500 miles.

Mine's booked in for 1st service on 26th. Can't decide whether to mention the brakes or live with it. I suspect they'll just put new pads on and charge me, rather than fix it under warranty!!

Another note :
Had my car "in the air" today (rear only) and turned the wheels. Anybody knows if it's normal that the pads have contact with the disc all the time ?

On the rear right, the contact is always there.
On the rear left, the contact is there 1/2 time, meaning that I hear the Pad contacing the disc, then it stops and begins again (when turning the wheels).

Seems like the calipers don't retract correctly, I already had them greased wherever possible.
T

Dealer cleaned the discs and pads and champhered teh corners of the pads. Seems to have cured the squeak, at least for the first 30 or so miles I ve done since I picked it up.

Kindly accept my *Bump* (As treffeners slowly move in again)

From Bosch Brakes FAQ (http://www.boschusa.com/AutoParts/FAQs/BrakePads/) :

Brake noise can be caused by a number of different factors:

* Pad edges engaging the rotor, causing chatter, vibration and noise
* Vibration of rotors, pads and steel backing plates
* Caliper piston vibrating against the brake pad steel backing plate
* Vibrating shims can vibrate
* Rusted steel backing plates
T

Squeaks at low speed can also be related to the material that the pads are made of: my 1177s tend to squeak at low speeds, but are quiet when hauling the car down from higher velocities. It can be normal, and in my case, I put up with it.

Thierry, some minimal contact between pads and disc is normal; the discs tend to push the pads back when the pressure from the piston is withdrawn...
