MG MGF Technical - Tyre pressure

Hi all. Recently (3 months ago) had 4 new tyres fitted to my 1.8I they are 16 inch 215/40 F1 Eagles GSD3 tread pattern. I also had 4-wheel laser alignment done at 3 minutes (cannot remember if it was in or out but got the setting from this forum but decided to go more to zero, rather then the full 0.5 minutes). Unfortunately I had blow out so had to have a tyre changed today. The fitter told me my tyres were all wearing on the inner and outer edges but not in the middle, which suggests incorrect tyre pressure. He did a check on the tracking and it was OK. I have also checked the pressures and they are 24 fronts and 28 back. I am now a bit puzzled. Does anyone have any idea? Is it better to try a bit more pressure in the tyres?.

P.S. The Car has also just passed its MOT and this did not find anything wrong with the suspension.
Dave

My user handbook says for this size tyre 36lb/in rear and 24 front, but the fronts are 195/45 r16 84V

It does sound like your tyres are showing signs of under-inflation

Dave,

I presume you have an F and not a TF or Trophy? The tyre pressures on the Trophy (which Mike has) were way different to the F on the rear (hence Mike's manual saying 36psi). I wouldn't have thought the pressures you are running are (entirely) causing the problem, but you could afford to take them up a tad without any concern. I typically run 28 front and 30 rear.

My car is an MGF 1998. I will try 28 and 30 this may help, thanks

Dave

Dave,

'Book' values for your car are 26 front, 28 rear. However, slightly over-inflating has a few benefits; like Dave Livingston I run my F at 28/30 , and it's noticeable that the steering feels a tad lighter. It's all very tyre-dependant, though; experiment about these values!

what are you checking your pressures with? Forecourt gauges can be all over the place so I would recommend a decent one likes sykes-pickavant(sp!). I got mine from Halfwits for about £12 a while ago and its a nice piece of kit and when checked on a rig at work was bang on the pressures.
Tony

Your point is very valid and foot pumps can be out by a large margin. The gauge I have is quite accurate it is a pencil type where the air pushes the barrel along and you read of the sides. Still it may be worth me comparing it to another to see if it is true.
Dave

I have an Abingdon fitted with KHMHO 215/ZR40/16 86W all round. I would welcome recommendations for pressures.
