MG MGF Technical - Tyre Pressures

What tyre pressures are you all running your cars on?

30 all round - F 1.8i

Of course the correct question should have included phrases such as "what size wheels do you have", "what size tyres do you have", "do you prefer understeer or oversteer of neutral" etc
JohnP

I use 30psi all round - both for 15" and 16" tyre fitments :o) This is on an MGF: the TF uses slightly different tyre pressures, and unfortunately, I can't say how that car handles on 30psi as I've not personally tried it...

Anyone explain the TF tyre pressures?

whats the benefit of running F tyres at 30psi as opposed to the recommended 26?
Colin Ashworth

As stated I run at 30 psi all round on 15" wheels. I just prefer the feel of it. If definatly corners better and seems to help to prevent the notorious tire edge wear.

Very personal thing I just prefer it. My best advise is just try it. If you hate it try a little bit higer or lower.

Unfortunately, I can't give a definitive answer to that one - I'm not a chassis development engineer. The TF does use a very different rear suspension design - and this means that it uses its tyres differently to the MGF (if you know what I mean). The higher rear tyre pressure with lower fronts maybe a way of encouraging understeer as a low tyre pressure means that a tyre will develop a larger slip angle sooner than a tyre with a high pressure...

When I converted to 30psi all round I find, out on the track (sprints are short races, so tyre heat never becomes a problem), that the car handles very neutrally - so I keep the settings for the road as well :o)
Rob Bell

Rob,

Its interesting that in theory the TF should have a better set up but is encouraging understeer which is not adjusted out of F with pressures.

Again an assumption is that road cars are set up with understeer, so your wider fronts counter this for more balance.

Also interesting is trade off between larger contact patch with lower pressures and higher loading with increased pressures, but heat is a deciding factor as with lower pressures more flex.

Do you know if they have diff camber settings?

Hmmmm,

Then again the Trophy uses the same presures as the TF
26(goodyear) /28 (yoko) Front and 36 Rear.

Paul,

So Yoko's with more grip (assumed) have a higher pressure, is the Trophy lighter any diff weight split or camber changes?

I find this interesting re tyre pressures
