MG MGF Technical - Tyre rubbing wheelarch liner
Yesterday I took the MGF out for a little drive and noticed that, when on right lock, the outer edge of the driver-side front tyre is rubbing the wheelarch liner. The liner appears to be correctly located and isn't falling out so I'm not sure of the cause. Is this just a minor issue or is it indicative of something more serious? What should I be checking and fixing to make this go away? Any useful hints and tips gratefully received. Thanks in advance |

Have you checked the ride height recently? Have you lowered the car? Have you recently fitted over size tyres? If you look on Rob's site http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/ under DIY Hydragas lowereing you will find full instructions for checking. HTH |

Thanks for the reply John. I neglected to mention that (as far as I know) the car is totally standard - no darkside mods I'm afraid! I'll check the ride height tonight. 368mm +/- 10mm is standard? |

Adrian, When I fitted bigger tyres to the front of my car I got some rubbing on full lock (inside of tyre, not outside). Cure was a powerfull hair drier to soften the plastic liner so that I could push it further back out of the way. However, as John says chack all the obvious causes if you haven't changed anything recently. DC |

Adrian Not an 'unheard of' problem this and the answer is very simple - a hairdryer! If you can get a hairdryer (or such) to blow on the liner and warm it you can then reshape it so as to avoid the rubbing. BTW this what a dealer 'in the know' will do. Ted |

OK, that hairdryer trick sounds like a do-able solution. BTW, is there anything vulnerable behind the wheelarch liner as I was also considering holding it back with a little self-tapper? |

Adrian, There really isn't that much room between the liner and the wheelarch. Just heat the plastic liner up and hold it tight up against the metal with something so you don't burn yourself and when it cools it will stay in place. Drilling holes is just another source of water ingress and somewhere else to rust. |

Ted, It was worth waiting for, because you can spell hairdryer :-) BTW CSMGF visited the Museum of Flight at the old fighter station at East Fortune yesterday. I know that you were in the RAF and I would recommend it to anyone visiting the East Lothian area as a good day out. |

Dont know East Fortune - where abouts is it? I spent a few months at Leuchars back in 1958! Ted |

But what I really think is: why if never had this rubbing. it's happening now? Any suspension change? bushes? Any geometry change? I won't feel comfortable knowing something in my car structure may have changed... Regards |

Ted, East Fortune is on the other side of the Forth from Leuchars. It's just inland from North Berwick. DC |
