MG MGF Technical - Tyre sizes - TF
We have an 80th anniversary TF on 16" alloys that needs new tyres. The pevious owner has put really crappy ones on that are the same size on all four rims (? - is this right, I know the fronts & backs were different on our F) They are no good in the snowy weather so we'd like to get some Toyo TR1's on there asap. Could anyone advise me of the correct sizes for the Anniversary edition & if in fact the Toyos are the best tyre for the job still? Cheers Sally |

Are you fitting them to the fornt or Back? I ask because you might have missed past threads referring to instability if new tyres are only fitted to the front. The best tyre purely for snow is probably a set of skinny spares (but rubbish the rest of the year). Chris |

All round funds permitting or at a push backs first & then fronts the following payday ;) |

Toyos are probably considered to be best mid-budget tyres to buy. Size is whatever your Drivers Handbook states. This may be 215/40 R16 Z all round albeit some had smaller profile fronts. As Charles says, many people especially across Europe fit the 14in Spare wheel for use on Snow BUT they also change the tyre for a proper Winter Tyre. A standard summer tyre rubber goes hard at 7 Deg.C making it useless for winter driving therefore many countries make softer rubber Winter Tyres Mandatory' MGF 16in Weels are too large to take snow chains so unless you are taking the car Winter Skiing, then new Toyos will be good. I disagree with Geoff. TF's always had 195's on the front and 215's on the rear on 16 inch wheels. |

>I disagree with Geoff. TF's always had 195's on the front and 215's on the rear on 16 inch wheels. Geoff is correct. TFs were fitted with 215 tyres all round on 16" wheels for a short period of time. Due to problems with tram-lining the specification was changed back to 195 at the front. |

The 1999 75th Anniversary "mk1" F also has 215/40 ZR 16s all round as standard. Obviously an "anniversary" thing |

My 2003 TF160 is fitted with Toyo's as follows: 195/45 Front @ 28PSI 215/40 Rear @ 36PSI Goes like a rocket! ![]() |

Wrong, Dieter. The '99 Anniversary had 215/40 16s all round because it had the new 16" alloys. The 1998 MGF Owner's Handbook (VDH101280) on page 103 states "215/40 R16 Z Goodyear Eagle F1...fit to 7 x 16 alloy wheels only - front & rear" |
