MG MGF Technical - Tyre squeal

A few weeks ago my rear tyres began to squeal when going round tight corners (eg islands), even at very low speeds. Up to this time in three years of using the car, a 1999 1.8i, I have never had this before.

The tyres, NTC3s,have done about 4k miles and all the pressures are correct.

Ideas please and is it likely to be expensive.
John

Sounds to me like your wheel alignment could be duff - cheap answer.

Wait for others to respond though.. - could it be the driveshafts? - anything loose/broken around the joints?

That's a weird one John; I can't think of any particular reason why tyres should start to squeal over familar roads driven at 'normal' speeds.

No idea, sorry :o(

BTW, have you replaced the NCT-3s recently? There is a particular formulation for MGFs that is different to the generic NCT-3 - and these can perform differently (different compound hardness for example) from the MG specified tyre.

Had a similar problem with our Freelander at about 3000 miles from new, this also squealed the tyres at very low speeds and also when crossing white lines at any speed. Four wheel tracking cured the problem. As this was performed by the local dealer and was not charged for I cannot give you a price, however four wheel laser tracking (Front axle tracked only) on a series 3 Land Rover cost £24.68 inc vat. This was performed by our local Tyre & Exhaust centre. Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice. I had a feeling that it might be something to do with the differential not operating properly, but maybe the back wheels have got out of alignment somehow. Anyway I will get this checked.

I've had the same problem on other cars when the tire tread got down to about 50%. It could be that the compound becomes harder as the tyres age or that the outer portion is of a softer compound than the inner.
