MG MGF Technical - Tyre wear
Was reading another thread on tyres and it seems that the front's wear out first. However my car (from new) has virtually no waer on the front's but the rears are nearly worn out. I don't drive the car hard and mostly on motorways. Is this normal (car has covered 20K miles). (I have scuffed the front wheels so I know the garage didn't swap them over during the service). |

Milton Keynes, with that racetrack? Yes I would expect more rear wear for you in MK!! |
Will Munns |
Er, no, the rears wear quicker on an F. Seems like twice as fast on mine. Reasons? Er, dunno. Transfer of engine torque to the road? Weight of engine? Lateral slippage of hind-end of car? I have no idea. |

On the F they do do a lot more work than on a 'normal' car, more than FWD cars because the power is going thru them and more than BMW's because the engine is above them (giving you better grip... nice) Will |

I knew someone would comment on Milton Keynes, but really it spends most of it's time on the A34, commuting to Newbury. Glad to hear that it's normal for the rears to wear out first (so there's nowt wrong with my car then). |
Keith |
Oh, and the other reason is that I haven't worked out how to do wheelies on the front wheels yet. 8) |
David Bainbridge |
Nope, nowt wrong with your car. 20k for rears is not bad - best I've ever had is 26k. Happy MotorinG ;o) |

er keith, never mind the scuffs on your front tyres, you’d certainly notice the difference if someone swapped back for front! or maybe you hadn’t noticed the small size difference? |

unless you have say 205 all round?? |

>Was reading another thread on tyres and it seems that the front's wear out first The F is prone to suffering with uneven tyre wear at the front which often leads to premature replacement of the front tyres. However, assuming there is no uneven wear then it would be normal to expect the rears to wear faster. 20k miles on a set of tyres on a F/TF isn't really bad at all TBH. |
Paul Lathwell |
Yes Tony, mine are 205's all round. |

As noted above, the fastest wear would normally occur on the driven wheels. Most modern cars are front wheel drive, hence most cars wear the front tyres faster than the rears. The MGF is RWD so the rears wear faster. Reckon my rear Goodyear F1's lasted about 10k - I swapped the fronts & rears at 9k when the rears had about 3mm left & the fronts has 6mm - all 4 wore out at about 17k. |
