MG MGF Technical - Tyres!!
Getting ready for a new set of tyres on the back of my '98 VVC. What do we all recommend?
Richie
Kind of depends what you have on the front. I'm a big fan of Bridgestone S03s, very grippy. I've only ever had them all four wheels though
Ralph
better tyres at the back is OK, better tyres at the front is dangerous

>>>>better tyres at the back is OK, better tyres at the front is dangerous Interesting one that. I know it's true, but surely the greater tyre wear at the rear means that many F's are being driven around with grippier front tyres?!? Just to be difficult...
David Bainbridge
Not difficult, but observent. and yes in the wet this may cause a greater hazard of the rear end jumping out- this will only happen if you are putting in the power and you go thru water greater than the depth of the tread though. Will

simple test with any model car: block the rear wheels with a strip of office tape. Put it on a desks end, lift the desk and see see car running. Look at the direction, where it steers. Then release the rears and block the front wheels and do the same. Who tries and reports ? Impressive ? Dieter PS model car can be any. Best results with 1:18 scale :)

I have Bridgestone S02. Much better in the wet than the standard NCTs. The only downside is that after about 10K miles, the rears are close to the limit on wear. The fronts are still fine though. I would not say I drive particularly hard. One tyre dealer said that the S03s were softer than the S02s. |

Currently got Goodyear F1's all round, compared to the Goodyear tourers on the previous car - wow, great grip, excellent in the wet, superb at speed - £80 each from local place

See also http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/tyres.htm for other BBS rated tyres. My favourites are the now obsolete SO-2s. Thankfully the set I have have a good 10-15k miles left in 'em :o)

Had the chance today to drive the MGF of a mate who has the Bridgestone RE720.... (215 on 16 inch all around) Hmm, they are better than my Eagle F1 in the dry. (IMO). 215 all around on mine as well. I rated for the F1 (BBS stage #3) the other year :( :o) Dieter

Interesting comment there Dieter... IMO SO-2s are markedly superior to F1s in the dry - so much more communicative :o)
