MG MGF Technical - Tyres Heinz 57
I have just purchased an MGF 1.8 VVC year 2000 car and it has a variety of tyres fitted. On the front are 2 Uniroyal Rallye 540 rain tyres 215 40 R16 82V. On th o/s rear is a Fulda Extremo 215 40 ZR 16 and the n/s rear is a barum bravuris 215 40 ZR 16 86W. Which if any of these tyres are the correct rating as there is a mixture of r & zr and 82 V and 86 W. I was hoping that the 2 uniroyals were ok as they seem to be relatively new I realise that having 2 different makes / tread patterns is far from ideal on the rear. Would putting similar uniroyals on the back be OK. |

Before too long the experts will be along to advise you, but this off Rob Bell's site is well worth a read. http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/tyres/index.htm Dave |

To start this thread of responses off, welcome to the MG Enthusiast forum! Personally i've never heard of any of the brands you mention and it sounds like you have a real tyre coctail going on there! My suggestion to you would be to replace all four tyres with something better known, tested and more reliable. An expensive upfront option it maybe, but worth the proper handling and safety. Rob bell covers the tyre story well so follow the link to find out more http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/tyres/ though his tyre bible link seems down at the mo ; ) One things for sure, never mix brands on an MGF! More expert knowledge to follow im sure! |

As has been said above, the F is very sensitive to the types of tyres that you fit. If the car feels ok with what you've got fitted just now you're in for a pleasant surprise when you get something decent fitted. Remember the other things that can affect handling and tyre wear is suspension height and tracking. >> Would putting similar uniroyals on the back be OK. << I am not familiar with the Uniroyal Rallye 540s - but having these all round is probably better than the hotch potch that are currently on your wheels. If you were in the market for a complete set of new tyres, then the Bridgestone RE-720 and Toyo T-1R come in for particular praise here on the BBS, so these would be the one's I'd opt for. Details on the link mentioned above (thanks guys!) |

I don't know if it's legal in the UK to have different tires on the same axle, here in Holland it is illegal. I would get a new set for the rear (the Toyo's), and try the front tires before deciding on changing. Johan |

David, Thanks for the info re csmgf the site looks great and very useful. I am a member of both the MGOC & MGCC having had an MGB previously so I have about 5 events in the diary for the summer so far including the caledonian run, lakes & border marches run, mellerstain house classic car show & the wheels of yesteryear at ingliston. if you are at any of these please say hello (my car is w266 kls and I will be with the edinburgh MGOC stand) NOW BACK TO THE TYRES. I think I will just have to bite the bullet and get 4 tyres probably goodyear F1's as they seem to be ok aslon as you get 4 the same and they are relatively easy to get but having said that all of the large national tyre fitting companies I have tried will have to order them up as 215 40 ZR 16's seem to be an unpopular size ! Your might want to have look at buying a set of wheels complete with new tyres. for example http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=10414&item=4534081625&rd=1 |

>> I don't know if it's legal in the UK to have different tires on the same axle, here in Holland it is illegal. << In the UK it is illegal to mix cross-ply tyres with radial ply tyres on the same axle. However, although hardly advisible, it is legal to mix different brands of radial ply tyres (or cross ply - so long as they are both of the same construction) on the same axle. |
