MG MGF Technical - Tyres Wearing

My 1998 F is wearing the front tyres on the inside has anybody any clues what can cause this please?

Hi John

The answer is tracking, pure and simple. Too much toe-out on your car.

Take your car to an independent tyre specialist with 4-wheel tracking equipment, and get them to retrack your car for you.

If the car continues to wear tyres even with correct standard front settings, then re-set the front toe angle to either parallel front (0º00') or 5 minutes toe in (+0º05')

John,

I would also check the ride height before you get it tracked. If it's too low this can affect tyre wear as well.

After my first set went on the inside edge I had my 1998 F set to 5 minutes toe in (+0º05'). This resulted in a worn outside edge. I now have it set to parallel front (0º00'), handleing is better and so far tire wear is looking good.

Sensible advice David, and this is what your local MGR dealership will tell you. But in fact this is not entirely true. The camber resulting from a low ride height (even as low as 320mm) does not result in a camber any greater than -1º30' - which is not hugely greater than the standard specification range. Moreover, most tyres are tolerant of negative cambers of greater than 2º - so the MG's camber is not going to trouble the tyres. IMO the tyre wear is down to toe-angles, pure and simple. And there is plenty of experience on this BBS to back this observation up ;o)

My main dealer adjusted both my ride height and re tracked my '98F at the last service. Up to then had even tyre wear but they said height was well out of spec. Since then had real uneven wear - so much infact that the inner tread had disappeared completely. Local tyre centre could not believe how out of track the car was. Lost half the life of the tyre. Make sure you get it tracked at a reputable place which may not always be a main dealer who is not so used to tracking cars ?????

'Drifting' of the tracking does seem a problem with the F - to get best out of tyres may need a yearly 'free' check at a tyre centre when they offer that service ;-)
