MG MGF Technical - Unacceptable

I have just run into a new aspect of this BBS which I am very much against.

I had my IP address blocked on this BBS. My crime was using the word BULLS*IT on the BBS.

Ok I can accept the refusal of a post because it contained a banned word, but what I can't accept is the automatic blocking of the IP address.

Once that is done we have the situation where you can only logon form that IP as a member. Now I am a member but my details are only on my home machine this meant that the only way back in is to beg Mike to remove the block on my IP address.

In my opinion this is completely against the spirit of the BBs and the internet. The reason given was a spate of kids trying to enter rude words on the BBS, the result of which is mike made the system block the IP of anyone logged on as a non member who uses one of the banned words.

Although it will make no difference the only form of protest I have open to me is to stop using the BBS. This may seem unimportant but sometimes you have to make a stand nomatter how insignificant, for what you believe in.

As I said earlier, I am quite happy for my post not to be accepted but to block my IP address is going too far.

So I say farewell to you all as I go and find a BBS that does not use such draconian methods of control it's users. To be honest I am quite insulted, I have been using the internet for many years now and I have never had my IP blocked. Because some kids abused the BBS mike has seen fit to treat us all like children. I don't answer to mike and I'm not going to start now.

Maybe you can give your opinion, I don't expect you to feel the way I do but if you do I suggest a boycot until this matter is resolved. My membership will be removed as soon as I have made this protest on the 3 BBSs that I have used quite hapily for the last 5 years.

I feel for you on being banned for such a 'little' swear word BUT there has to be cut off point somewhere.

Mike introduced this new 'software' about a year ago because of the huge level of abuse we were getting from 'casual' posters and personally I think it is a good idea.

And the important thing is it does not ban you if you are a registered member.

What you have just posted proves that it works - well done Mike.

I think you are over-reacting. If you can still post as member what is the problem? I think that not accepting swear words from non registered users can hardly be described as a draconian method.

Is it really so hard to re-enter your id and password when using a different PC? spoon-fed or what ;-)

I think you are all missing the point.

The point is not about controling sware words it's about blocking ip addresses for non members. What I am saying is that refusing a post is all that is required to control this. Blocking IP addresses is going too far.

If this is the logic we may as well only allow members to post, at least this way we all know where we stand. I'm sure it was discussed at the time and it was unfortunate that I was away then as I was going throught having to sell my F.

If these methods of handling this problem are used they should be publicised in big clear lettering so people don't run into it without warning.

In my case yesterday I was using the BBS from work so my accurate IP address was unavailable to me, as it was, mike had to work it out from the post. As I have been going under the name T.E.D I was not using my members ID. As I joined almost 5 years ago I could not remember my password having it all bookmarked on my PC at home, I could not even remember what email I was using because I have not posted as a member very often recently.

This all meant that I could not continue with any discussions until I got home.

I understand that mike has to look after the system and try to stop abuse but I simply feel this is going too far and for the sake of a few idiots we all have to lose our freedom.

It is a matter of standing for what I believe in, although I have broken that a little by responding now. I will read your responses I will just nolonge participate in any discussions or use any links from this site.

If you are happy with the way this has been done then that is up to you, personally I refuse to support something that goes against the spirit of friendship I have come to expect within the MG community.

It does not matter how much of a problem the spate of stupid posts caused the sollution does not require the blocking of IP addresses when the post can so easily be refused and certainly not for one wrong entry. Simply to say "oh well, you can still use the BBS as a member" is simply not good enough and completely misses the point.

The best way of dealing with abusive posts etc.. is NOT to reply to them in anyway at all..By replying you only bait them and so it continues.......

If the idiots who do it get no replies at all they will soon get bored and go elsewhere...

So if you read one bite your tongue !!! and DO NOT rise to the bait...

Hi yawl, well in the backgroung I have been talking to mike and he has has agreed to review the policy. Mike still proving he is reasonable and willing to look at other points of view.

You wait till you get people trying to kill you matey! Its not easy being MEGA you know. There always some one who wants to catch you!

But seeing How its Lotus and MG drivers there not any real problem, their cars fall to bits duing the chase:)

GO and load up a handful of IPs or if you like i could give you a few web address that will "Cloke" your IP.
