MG MGF Technical - Underheating?
I have recently had a new head gasket and radiator but it takes about 10 miles of driving to get the temperature any where near normal, the work was carried out at the local MG/ Rover dealer is this normal? |

Hi Martin, I would suspect either no thermostat fitted or it is stuck open, or it has been drilled to allow more fluid to pass through it. It is not normal, mine gets to "normal" in 1.5 miles with heater on, .75 miles heater off. Mike |

Sounds like that. Howe to verify: Jack up the car front or rear and start the engine from cold. Feel the hose temperature at the underbody pipes or at the radiator. If you feel them getting warm only a few minutes after engine start, then the thermostat never closed. |

Stuck thermostat, replaced by garage free of charge, my faith in garages is partially restored! |

errrm.... found the same trouble of *underheating* today at my own car. Engine ran between 60 and 90°C even after 50km on a DE Motorway (100mls/h) 11° C ambient temperature :( I think I should aswell have a look to the thermostat. Fuel consumption was high in the last month. May be the thermostat had already gone in April when the coolant had boiled over on the Alps trip. |
