MG MGF Technical - Uneven Suspension
Hi, A couple of months back I noticed that the rear drivers side suspension was roughly 2-3 cm's lower than the passenger side. I had this inspected at my local MG dealer, and they said that they couldnt find anything wrong and simply pumped it up. I know that the suspension is supposed to settle and is a "serviceable" item, but it has started to drop slightly again. Are there any DIY things that I could do to stop it falling further? (ie tightening something up etc) Thanks, Roger.

There is a pressure test that can be made on the suspected HG unit, ask the dealer to perform this, assuming he knows how to do this. The test will acertain if the internals of the HG unit have failed. Often the case when there is no apparant leaks.HTH Mike, dinner break over;-)

Cheers Mike, Looks like another trip to the dealer!! Rog.

The driver's side rear hydragas unit is the commonest area of hydragas failure Roger. Odds are this is what has occurred here. In addition to pressure checks that Mike suggests, there may also be evidence of leakage of the water/anti-freeze hydragas fluid in the vicinity of the sphere.

Thanks Rob, I will check for leakage. Any ideas on the likely cost of getting this sorted? ......and can the sphere be replaced as a DIY job? Thanks, Rog.

How old is your car Roger? In most cases I've heard about, it has been covered by warranty, so I don't know how much it would cost - and I don't know if anyone has replaced it on a DIY basis. I'd have thought it feasible if you have a well equipped garage and the time - plus access to the workshop manual!

Rob, Its a 99 VVC. I have a non MGR warranty which surprise surprise doesnt cover suspension!!. I am not the best DIY person (in fact I am awfuul!!). Maybe a trip to the dealer. I recently had a bit of crash damage to the drivers door, and asked my dealer to look at the suspension then. They stated that there was nothing wrong, and that it had "settled unevenly". Anyway thanks for the help, Rog.
