MG MGF Technical - Uneven tyre wear

Dear All - the front tyres on my 98 MGF are wearing on the inside. I have owned the car from 4000 miles. it is now 38k. The front tyres are approx. 3 years old. Is it simply tracking or is it camber angles?

I had this problem recently on my 2001 MGF with 11k miles. Front offside inner was scrubbed with the remainder of the tyre hardly worn. Took it to Brown & Gammons for 4 wheel alignment and they commented that my car was considerably out hence the uneven tyre wear. I would recommend getting the 4 wheel alignment as a first option. It's the old chestnut - tracking.

Get the tracking checked - and if the toe-angles are set within factory tolerances, then use the TF setting of 0 degrees toe at the front - or even 0 degrees 5 minutes toe-in.

I'd also check the ride height before I spent money on tracking.
David Clelland

I go with David, ride height first then tracking. If the ride height is out it needs to be sorted first and then the tracking done. Any adjustments to ride height woill affect the tracking so you don't want to do tracking twice.
Nkosi_Ecosse

Ride height is measured from the wheel centre to the wheel arch lip vertically above. The manufacturer's setting is 368mm±10mm (with a temperature compensation of 0.7mm per degree difference from 17ºC).

However, unless the ride height is lower than 350mm, I wouldn't mess with it: dealerships are notoriously bad at getting this right - usually due to lack of time.

how much should you expect to pay for a 4 wheel alignment

Helen,
Depends on where you go of course. On a recent thread on this subject the price ranged from a massive exhorbitance to about £35.00. Shop around, I don't know where you are but get it done well, it is worth it.

I paid around £25 for a 4-wheel alignment when I had new rears fitted around a month ago, which required a front toe in change. The previous occasion required both front and rear tracking adjustment which cost, from memory, around £45.
