MG MGF Technical - URGENT HELP NEEDED - GEAR SELECTION PROBLEM

Hi all,

I need some urgent help as the cars currently up on the ramps!

Driving home last night in really heavy rain and all of a sudden the gearstick went funny.

I can select 2nd and 4th with no problems.

1st and 3rd are very difficult and there's no 5ht gear at all. The gear stick pushes all the wayforward until its touching the centre console and the gearstick just flaps around. Yet 2nd and 4th engage as though nothing is wrong. For that reason I've eliminated the clutch.

I've now stuck it up on the ramps and had a look.

I think the problem lies here

Where the gear cable passes through that bracket there should be a black clip holding the cable in place as shown in the picture. Just between the rubber boot and the bracket, a black square. I think I've lost mine. I can grab the cable and move it about backwards and forwards with my hand.

Does that sound like the culprit???

If so does anyone have an EPC handy to get the part number for that little clip?

I don't have the right part number, but if you have lost the clip you will see a clean patch where it used to be. If your diagnosis is correct, the replacement cost is only about 40p and you may pick up one without ordering.

If are tempted to drive anywhere, try to not to use 1st and 3rd because you may break the cable where the stranded part goes into the crimp. Then you really will have troubles.

Yeh it is clean there.

Just phoned the dealers....none in stock!

What exactly do dealers carry in stock as any time I phone for something they never seem to have it in!
Bob Millar

Nothing to do with gear-selection.., but

Yes, the dealers NEVER have anything in stock.

When someone decided to screwdriver a lock, I asked them for new locks, and they had to order them!
Ended up with the car in the garage for two weeks.

Now how does that work.. - that part should be fundamental for security.

Your gear clip should be one of 100 in a bottom drawer somewhere.

What's wrong with them!?

5 dealers phoned...none in stock!

Number 6 has it, sadly they're 30 miles away. Slightly too far to cycle and I need the part today!

Just FYI the part number in case anyone ever needs it is:

UYC10006
Bob Millar

Can they courior it Bob? Mind you, seems excessive for a 40p part!!! :o(
