MG MGF Technical - Urgent question for Rob, Will, Russell etc...

Guys,

You should know the story about my wheel noise by now:

Quick question that needs answering in the next 5 mins :-)

If I had a warped brake disc, would I get a judder on braking?

MGR can't hear the sound today and haven't (and seem to even refuse to) checked for warping of the brake disc..

it depends on how bad they are out of true, you can feel it through the pedal or a non progressive slowing down as the friction varies. You can also have a slightly "long pedal" the first time you apply the brakes as the pads will push the pistons in slightly.
Tony

probably too late but - YES a bit like early ABS pulsing through the pedal.
JohnP

Well.. they must be REALLY not trying to find the noise on my car today... they took it out twice and couldn't hear a thing whereas I've had to listen to it all the way home just now :-) Its now booked back in for 2 days this time next week...

Oh well thanks for the two answers above guys... there doesn't seem be a juddering when I'm braking... just the noise...

Can I check for a warped disc myself without taking the calipers apart? just take the wheel off?

Cheers

Chris.

ps. sorry for starting another thread on this :-(
Chris Tromans

Chris, yes you can check. Depends how warped. Hold a pointer (pencil?) to the disk and 'spin' the disk. The warp will move the pointer by the amount of warp.
If you see what I mean? May only be a few thou and not visible to naked eye.
JohnP

Yep... got you... I'll try and get the wheel off tonight if it doesn't get dark too early... just have to make sure I tighten my nuts up afterwards enough so that it doesn't fall off...

Cheers again.

Hi Chris
I've been following your thread about your rear wheel noise for a while now as my girlfriend has had the same problem for months!!!
On her car the noise does disappear and reappears for no reason, don't know if it helps at all but I have fitted new discs/pads and its still there..... very frustrating I know! Was thinking about changing the wheel bearing but it doesn't seem to have worked on yours. I will keep an eye on this thread to see how you progress and let you know if we have any luck.
All the best Rob.

I had a noise from the rear wheel... turned out not to be the rear bearing... but instead the rear hub. The bearing fell out when it was being replaced!!

Just a thought.

Bearing noise tends to be worse when cornering, but almost no one reports this on MGFs - so another vote for wheel bearing problems.

A warped disc I have never had the pleasure of experiencing, but I presume that there would be a 'swish-swish' noise as the disc brushes past the pads?

The best way to look for a rotor that is out of true is to use a dial position indicator. They're about 10 quid, and are also invaluable in cam timing (as Tim will tell us!) Available from the Draper on-line catalogue IIRC (and always available from shows like the Silverstone weekend). The workshop manual provides the run-out tolerances. This is the only way to be truely sure as to whether or not your discs are at fault.
Rob Bell

I still think its the pad not moving freely in the caliper carrier.

The noise was easier to hear with the roof down - surely the garage can hear it?
Russell Parslow

Russell,

The garage say they couldn't hear it yesterday... but again, I heard it all the way in this morning...

Unfortunately I had no time to take the wheel off last night again so haven't had a chance to look myself :-(
