MG MGF Technical - URGENT- Power Steering

Someone help!

I pulled into the petrol station today and realised I had parked on the wrong side so I got back in started the car, when I restarted the power steering light came on and the power steering was off.

Any ideas what I can do?

Before I bought the car, the person I was buying off had the same problem and returned the car to the dealer and they said that it was a "chip". Anyway they said they only had to pull the "chip" out and put it back in and it was fine again.
Sounds like it could be the "chip" or "fuse" again and the dealer didnt do the job properly.

What shall I do?

Not sure but I think it could be the harness/connectors in best case.
The 'chip' you mean is the complette EPAS ECU.
Anyway, the archive covers the whole story in several threads.

Cheers Dieter.

For some unknown reason the power steering came back half way through a journey. Weird!

Ill have to get it looked at.

Hi Wez,

I had something similar.

When reversing out of my drive, if I was reving a bit to avoid all the school run parking! then sometimes my Light would come on an no PS. Always fixed itself after stoping and re-starting.

When I realised this was the case, I have not had the effect since (6 months). So probably nothing, just keep an eye on it.

Something to be aware of is high revs (>1500?) and no/low fwd speed (<30mph) - EPAS will think its a speedo failure and shut down.

This is to avoid over sensitising the steering at speed.

If you have an MOT done, this happens when they do the high idle emissions test. Power steering returns when you get going after the test.

Nothing to really worry about Wez - especially if you used a few rpm to get going without any forward speed: this is a 'fail-safe' mode that cuts the EPAS - a useful feature as I found when my car's speedo cable snapped... you simply do not want power assistance at 70 mph on a motorway!
