MG MGF Technical - VVC engine problem.....HELP!
hiya guys, picked up my beautiful little red mgf 1.8 vvc yesturday and have called it noddy! one problem though, it feels as though its hitting the rev limiter at 5500rpm which is well before the redline! is this when the vvc is ment to kick in? any ideas guys, i know its had the cambelt, headgasket done not to long ago? pleased help allison |

Allison It sounds a bit like a faulty engine management rev limiter rather than a vvc problem. Can't remember if there is a 'limp home mode'. However, I'm not an engine expert. Where did you get it? Is there any form of warranty? Are you far from Brown & Gammons in Baldock? If you are still struggling after Easter it may be worth giving their workshop manager a call; they are very well reknowned and provide a good service at sensible prices. They are fully MGR authorised for warranty and service but remain independant. Do keep us informed. |

thanks for your reply, i bought the car private so no warranty! im only down the road in welwyn so not far from baldock, will give them a try. thanks |

I'm in WGC so I'll look out for you. If you see a Le Mans Green TF with a green hood give a wave. It will either be me, male & greying rapidly, or female & blonde in an identical car. If me, you will get a wave back, if it's the blonde then a wave is unlikely as I've been trying to provoke some response for nearly a year. |

Are you sure it's a VVC ?. |

john i will definately give you a wave! andrew it is definately a vvc, do you have any ideas what it could be, could they have set it up wrong when they replaced the cambelt or headgasket? the engine runs fine apart from this problem of hitting the rev limiter far to early! |

Allison Have a nose around the archive, be a bit creative with keywords. It is sounding like : ECU fail safe mode VVC timing, sensors, etc CAT collapse, blocking the exhaust My initial thought was the fail safe/limp home mode of the ECU which reduces power, specifically by preventing the VVC cutting in. heres a couple to start with http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&access=&mode=archiveth&subject=69&subjectar=69&thread=200007291611255117 http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&access=&mode=archiveth&subject=69&subjectar=69&thread=2003121817024023445 |

Allison, this could be a simple wiring problem, check the electrical connectors to the hydraulic controller, if the head has been off then these could have been put back in the wrong positions with the symptoms you are talking about. Swap them around see if the problem is cured. Mike. |

Allison For the record, VVC's pull like trains from 4000rpm all the way to 7250rpm. The cams rotate slower holding the 8 inlet valves open longer. Rather like taking an extra deep breath. This of course increases the power stroke. If you are not sure if you have bought a VVC, check the VIN through the windscreen. The 8th digit will be T if it is a VVC and G if it is a 1.8Mpi. Tony |

cheers for your help guys, the car is definately a vvc i have checked the vin etc says vvc ontop of the manifold also. i will try and swap the wires round on the vvc hydraulic controler. if i have no luck i shall take it to a specialist ally |
