MG MGF Technical - VVC Ignition Lead Order - HELP!
Just replaced the ignition leads with Magnicore ones. BUT what is the correct order of leads at the coils? It's a VVC so there's the wasted spark. Got lead 1 on correct but then things got a bit tangled... So if someone can explain looking at engine from rear of car what the numbered order is left to right. Thanks. John. |

Sorted it in the end. From left to right: 1-2-3-4. obvious really! |

John, No. 1 cylinder is normally at cam drivebelt end (crankshaft pulley wheel end for older readers) No. 4 is at flywheel/clutch end. So looking at engine from rear of car it's 4-3-2-1 from left to right. jt |

Guys, I'm still confused about the different ignition types around, this 'wasted spark' I believe is the type with 2 double ended coils ounted directly on 2 spark plugs, you then only have 2 HT Leads going to the other 2 Spark plugs.....Is this correct? I thought that the VVC and older cars had the traditional coil, distributor, and 4 leads? I'm confused as I have a 2000MY 1.8i Stertronic with this 'wasted spark'? type of ignition and don't know which leads to buy to ensure I get the right type....VVC or 1.8i, and are there any other different versions out there? Can anyone tell me exactly which leads to order from B&G or MS to get the right type? Cheers, Nigel |

Wasted spark: When one cylinder is near top-dead-centre the spark plug fires to ignite the mixture in the cylinder. It so happens that another cylinder is also close to top-dead-centre on its exhaust stroke. In order to halve the number of coils from four to two, this cylinder is connected to the same coil and the plug fires into an empty, uncompressed cylinder. Hence, "wasted spark". This is used on the VVC and not the MPI. Try B&G sports leads, they are easier to fit than the competition leads. |

Hi all, the hard bit is how the cables are oriented on the VVC coilpack ;) When I moved my coilpack from the lower part of the engine to where the old resonator-box once was I noted down : 1-4-2-3. This is how the ignition cables enter the coilpack seen from left to right with the 4 connector turrets facing towards the viewer. Crystal clear ?? After this move - no more damp on the coilpack =sure starter even after heavy rain. And yes, the original ignitioncables are long enough. Only tampering is to lengthen the low voltage cables (brown/pink, white/black, ) BR, Carl. |

<Can anyone tell me exactly which leads to order from B&G or MS to get the right type? Nigel, your car,1.8i steptronic, will probably have the 2 coil packs mounted on top of two plugs with a short lead feeding the other two plugs, easy to check look into engine bay and see if there is a distributor cap if not then you have the plug mounted coil pack.At present there are no replacement leads for this design(?) If you need some can probably make some up in silicone ,costs ? About 15 pounds a pair.HTH. Mike |
