MG MGF Technical - VVC rev limit at 5800

I have a 97 MGF VVC which runs fine but will not rev past 5800. It revs smartly up to this point then hits what feels like a limiter. Is this the engine management system or some problem with the engine itself? Can the rev limit be altered (I believe it should rev to 7000)?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.
steve

If the VVC-mechanism is out of sync OR any other failure with the VVC-related sensors the limit can be that low. Only a trip to a decent dealer for a "Test-Book" run will tell what´s wrong. A wild guess is that there is something amiss with the oil temp sensor or its connector for the VVC-unit. This is NOT the same as the ordinary oil-temp sensor for the dash instrument !

Steve, has this suddenly occured or after some work to the engine??
mike

bump.

would be of interest whether the _funny_ behavior relates to the *fail save mode* of the ECU ?
Will happen when any sensor plays up.

I recently had a problem with uneven tickover which resulted in the oxygen sensor being replaced however the rev limit was 5800 prior to this. I mentioned the rev problem when I had this work done (by an MG dealer) but nothing else showed up on the engine report. The problem began about 3 months ago with no obvious cause or work to the engine. I am unfamiliar with the *fail save mode* of the ECU ?? Can this be reset?

Thanks
steve

All engine management settings / unsettings have to be done by Testbook usually at an MGR dealer.

I'd side with Carl and bet that it's the VVC oil temperature sensor. May also be the crank position sensor. These are the only two that spring to mind about limiting revs.
But... I really would take it down to the dealer and get it looked at. It's obviously gone into limp-home mode as it perceives there to be a problem. This problem is *usually* an inexpensive sensor that needs replaced.

Hope this helps,
P.
