MG MGF Technical - Water in boot
I occasionally get water in the rear boot of my 1997 vvc. Sometimes a pool gathers. Its at the rear centre of the felt/carpet. Many of you may get this dampness without realising it as the heat from the engine bay clears it after a fewdays. Anyone else come across his problem ????????

Yep, It turned out to be the gasket around the rear light fitting. I had it replaced at the dealers and it seemed to fix the problem..

Yep! I had the same problem, luckily it was under warranty so they replaced all the seals in the boot. Carl P1 KLF

GJ, There are loads of threads on this in the archives. Bruce

GJ - it is almost certainly the rear lamp gaskets leaking. They are incredibly easy to replace yourself (the lamps are only held on by a couple of nuts). Interestingly, the new gaskets are a full 2+ mm thicker than the original type - so obviously a very common problem. Check out the MGOC site that details this problem: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgoc&p=emg/000901.htm

Yes,I should have lookked the archives first. My tip is that a leaking boot fits into one of two scenarios. 1)With the car parked on the flat, a leak is likely to come from the light or lock area 2)If it happens with the car parked facing slightly downhill it will be caused via the engine/boot bulkhead. The normal drainage channel water gravity toward the light cluster doesn't then work and water backs up the other (wrong) way.

Suggest you remove the felt/carpet inside the boot and pack likely apertures with tissues. Pray for a rainy day, you won't have long to wait, and then check which tissue/s are wet. Bruce

Leaking seals around rear light clusters are a common problem on many cars, especially as the seals age. A cheap stop-gap measure is simply to undo the cluster, coat the seal on both sides with a smear of vasiline (or similar), and refit. Works wonders. :-) Tony
