MG MGF Technical - Water UNDER carpets - driver's side
Any clues as to where to start looking for likely ingress of rainwater that has appeared in the driver side footwell UNDER the carpets? Passenger side unaffected. The carpets aren't damp but the insulation underneath, in places, is wet and pulling it back from under the pedals to the edge of the driver's seat there are droplets of water on the bare metal, close to the grey polystyrene-like material taped to the floor. No water coming through the cheaters and spilling over the speakers so my thought is that it must either be coming up from the underside of the car when moving, or seeping in through the door seals and trickling down under the carpets. The latter doesn't explain the droplets on the metal however as would have thought that any water seeping in will instantly be absorbed by the insulating material. For info the car had been parked nose-up on my drive (which slopes down) for the whole rainy weekend so if water had come in from the pedal area it would of course trickle rearwards. Short of stripping everything out and testing under a hosepipe any ideas as to where I should start? thanks Paul |

Paul I had a similar problem and found that two of the bolts holding the tray across the bottom of the car were missing. The two bolts that were missing come up into the drivers footwell just in front of the seat. Replaced the bolts and now have a dry footwell.Might be worth a look. |

Thanks James - will have a look. |

I had a water leak and found a hole in the chassis above the fuse box. A seam was not properly sealed at manufacture. I used seam sealer and eventually fixed it but took ages as my car seamed to have loads of leaks. I have also used plenty of silicon sealant under the bonnet. Tom |

James - car up on ramps at friendly local garage proved all intact underneath. Tom - interested to know where under the bonnet you applied the sealant, I did notice quite a bit of water/condensation there todayso it may be dribbling down into the footwell. |

Paul, I used silicon sealant where ever there was a grommet and if fact the main wire loom grommet had warn out due to touching the windscreen wiper arm and had even queried it under warranty but is not a easy fix but they just put grease on it to try and prevent the grommet wearing out. The grommet where the speedo cable goes through on mine is perished and is also filled with sealant. Just make sure you clean the bits where you are going to apply sealant so it sticks. Tom |

Mine leaked after I replaced the driver sider window seal......the window was ok but water was geting in through the bottom door edge as I didn't replace the plastic film door liner (?shredder) which was peeld back when I had to adjust the window. Now sorted, dry footwell |

Tom, thanks. I'll try a hosepipe on the areas you suggest. Charles, no harm in checking that too! cheers Paul |
