MG MGF Technical - WET CARPET !!!!!!!!

My lovely little red Trophy is getting very wet behind the passenger seat but can't seem to find where the water is getting in (it does'nt appear to be coming from the roof) can anyone HELP. Cheers

Hello, Ive just noticed that mine has a leak somewhere in the front. I think it could be the doorseal? I normally park it facing downhill, and Ive noticed that there is a samll river of water creeping in at the very front lower corner of the door. I now park it facing uphill, and will monitor the situation closely!!

Yep - mine is leaking like a seive and leaving a puddle in the drivers footwell.

I'm thinking about getting a hood mate fo it, instead of flaffing around with seals etc.

Blimey,

Summers over, and here's the rain.

First, wet carpets on passenger side is a well known problem on the older F's and its due to the air intake under the bonnet having a poor seal to the body. There's loads on the archives, look for heater box in searching. It can be fixed by getting windscreen black stick sealant from halfrords and adding around plastic surround and body work.

If leaking behind seat. I'm afraid the best answer is to remove the seat and carpet and dry out. You will need a special star type tool for a wrench available from halfords to remove the seat. The carpets are pretty easy to remove.

Then with completly dry get some standard school blackboad chalk and draw horizontal lines on the bodywork panels. The proble is water is see thru and you can't see where its comes from, using chalk it will was away th chalk and you can see where water ingress is coming from.

Hardtop leaking over speakers. This is usually coming from the join on the topmost corners where the join of hardtop front joins the top of the windscreen. Unfortunatley due to a think called capilary action water can easily draw itsself thru a tiny gap. Bes solution is to go to halfords and get some electricl tape. The lind you use to cover electric bare wires, its pvc or something and like selotape and in various colours. Cut off a strip about 3 to 4 inches and add to top of windcreen overlapping the windscreen pillar and seal and roof, in parallel with the seal and sticking out ever so slightly to over hang. Get another pice about 2 inches and apply in T shape where this is the top of the T. This usually will provide a seal and the over hang allow water not to drop onto the top of the windows and so seap in but drip ont the window itself. (If black roof buy black tape).

You need to experiment and not leave too much of overhang as opening the door will catch. So I took a stanley knife and cut it down a bit, to allow door to open. If you do it well and colour match the hood you won't actually notice and you will have dry speakers.

However, there is also a problem with windows cheeter leaking, but if car dry with softtop then more likely to be this hardtop issue.

Finally leak at the door bottom. I think there was an issue with the seals (see archive) as newer MGF's have holes in the seal to allow water out. Try the mgf hints and tips sheet on robs site.

Quite a few years ago someone said that you don't ask an owner if his/her MGF leaks, you ask WHERE his/her MGF leaks. I took the front wheel arch liners out and sprayed water over the wing while I watched under the wing. The rain channeled down the door post and poured into some of the pressed holes and so onto the floor. With deft use of the silicon mastic gun, I stopped it. It's quite useful to take the carpet and underlay out, and then draw chalk lines around the inner sills. When it rains the drips cause breaks in the chalk, so you can see where they are coming from - good detective work.
